RA25 GT!!

Very Cool! Make sure you post up some pics when you can.

I'd be interested to know which importer you used, as I may want to import a JDM Corona hardtop.

Cheers,

Wow Shocked beautiful car.

Park THAT outside Toymotor's Australian headquarters and tell 'em 2 things:

1) this is what they should have sold locally all those years ago

2) this is the sort of car that the parent company should still be building, instead of Echos and Camrys and 48 variations of 4WD's Mad

If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set you back?

How difficult is the self-import process?

What other classic Toyotas have you brought in, if any?

River's RA25 GT was imported by Toyota for "evaluation" in 1973 or 74. I appeared in Modern Motor magazine at the time. It was driven by an executive for a while, then sold on. It survived in relatively original state.

The odd JDM GT was shipped in by Toyota like that - a Levin, a Corona GT four door (owner also lurks here) etc.

Hi,

Excellent stuff another RA25 in the land of Oz.

That's a damn nice car you got there and you'll soon agree with me that the RA25 was the pinnacle of the Celica.

Now we can have an RA25 cruise!!!!!

Hi,

Yes sir! Every switch, light, button etc is original and working - and that includes the air-con which kicks arse and frosts the vents when going full bore.

Is the "Celica" badge on the side of your car in itali or block script? If it's italic then you have a 1973-74 mode. If it's in block script then you have the late-74 to 75 model.

Mines a mid-late 73 model.

OK now I see. Wink I remember the Skyline and the 1800 SSS now, as I saw them advertised on the net somewhere, before one/both went to auction. The Skyline looked a lot like a GTR replica from what I remember. If I am correct you dad has a car workshop, judging from the photos.

I was thinking about getting the SSS at one point. Do you remember how much it ultimately sold for?

I would be very interested to know who compliances it for you, if you don't mind.

I'm considering purchasing and importing a RHD JDM 1974 Corona SR hardtop that somehow made it's way to California USA. The importing bit is easy enough with all the Mustangs etc coming in from the US. But all the engineers I have spoken to about compliancing in Vic on a mid-70's import have quoted me silly prices and have not seemed at all interested in the work. Mad

Hi,

If you're going to drive this rare classic around the streets, then be very careful.

Your car has a unique front bumper that is particular to that model and you can't substitute it from another Celica (except another RA25 or a TA27).

Your bonnet is unique and so are the front fenders. Your rear light assembly is unique. You can only get these from another RA25 or a TA27. If pressed, you may be able to put in an RA28 light assembly, but the mounting points are different and you'll have to create a flap in the middle to let you fill the tank.

Your rear bumper bar is unique, but it can be changed with an RA28 rear bumper. The RA25 rear bumper has red refelctors in them, where as the RA28 doesn't. Other than that they're the same.

Parts for these cars come up on Yahoo Japan every now and then, but they aren't cheap. A bonnet went a year or so ago for over $600 and you're looking at the same or more for a rear light assembly in good nick. I have yet seen a set of fenders for sale for this model. There's a guy in the USA with an RA25 and he has been searching for a couple of years now for a set of fenders.

So, be very careful with your classic 'cos it is almost unrepairable in the event of a major ding, especially at the front or rear.

If I had one of these I reckon I'd be getting fibreglass moulds mde up for all the unique panels to use as a back up. Better having something that fits but is not original than not having a car on the road 'cause you can't find parts.

Hi,

RA25 is built on the TA22 chassis, where the RA28 was built on the TA22 chassis. SO, if you need steering and brake bits etc then an RA25 owner gets TA22 parts.

The rear hatches are the same between the 25 and the 28.

Engine bay is longer in the 28.

The interior of the 25 is the same as the TA22.

The fuel filler on the 25 is at the rear centre, behind a flap that pulls down, where the 28 has its filler on the side.

The spare tyre on the 25 sits upright inside the rear hatch section on the drivers side.

The doors and all the glass is interchangeble between the 25 and the 28.

The 25 has the Celica badge on the side where the 28 doesn't.

The front side indicator of the 25 is smaller than the one on the 28.

The front indicators on the 25 are under the bumper as per TA22, where the 28 has them in the front bumper.

The clear front parking lenses are interchangeable between the 25 and the 28.

The 25 has the honeycomb grille, flat bonnet (no ugly bulge) with twin triple-fluting, different front fenders, different rear light assembly.

Get a 1973 TA22, put longer RA23-like fenders on it and a longer bonnet to suit, then make the back a liftback and you've basically got yourself a TA27. Remove the 1600cc engine and put in a 2000cc engine and it is then called an RA25.

The 25 looks better than a 28, but I'm sure there are those that disagree. In any event 25 or 28... they're both great looking cars. Smile

One Question; Does it have factory rear disc brakes and/or LSD diff?

Has rear drums on the back and discs on the front. The GT version has a P51 close-ratio all-steel 5speed gearbox, which feeds a two-piece tail-shaft that feeds a 7.5inch F-series 2-pinion 3.909:1 LSD.

No wuckers mante.

Also, take note the P51 gearbox is a Porsche (ZF patent) gearbox. It doesn't use synchros like your normal box, but uses small C-shaped brass bands.

P51's either in pieces or whole are very, very rare and if your gearbox goes then you'll have to put in a W50 gearbox. The W50 will fit, but you may have to check around to get one with the correct gear ratios. So, look after your gearbox - which means try not to use the greabox too much to assist in braking - 'cos brake pads are a lot cheaper and easier to get than parts for a P51 box.

Hi,

They came out with header - not extractors. You can always whack on some extractors yourself - but I'm not sure if they'd get in the way of the air-con compressor.

In regards to why the P51 uses C-bands instead of synchros.... I dunno. Maybe it's to make the box more expensive and harder to get bits for.
