hello everyone

i was given a 1981 corona from a mate whose gone back to china.
its a 4dr sedan with a 3sp auto. i believe its the xt130

seeing as i have a daily driver i've never had to use it so its
been sitting there unregistered for the last 3 years, plus the
clutch is slipping so i couldn't be bothered to get it fixed
when i have a perfectly good car to drive

long story short, ive found out that a 1jz would fit in, albeit
a bit of a tight fit

anyways i been thinking about this for a while as stripped and
properly prepared it would make a nice, fun car (i beleive its
only around 1100kg standard), until i read somewhere here that
the steering is pathetic

is this the actual steering or the suspension geometry?

would it still be worth it to convert to a drift/circuit/drag
play thing?

i notice chris davey has a xt130 with a 1jz, but its used for
drags i believe, and id like to concentrate more on circuit and
maybe try out drifting, where (would you believe it or not)
steering is kinda important

i know its gonna cost quite a bit (upwards of $15k) but i'm in
no hurry and id like to do as much of it myself (with help from
family/mates) as possible

would it really be better to go for an sr20?

alot of rules allow for engine conversions for raceing as long
as its within the family, so id like to keep away from that

sorry for the long post

nobody knows or nobody cares?

ive been searching around and some say the handling is good
once the suspension components are upgraded and some say
its pathetic no matter what

does anyone have an xt130 that they use for circuit?

is the handling 'fixable' is it is as bad as i hear?

if u wanted to use a 1jz in a drift car an xt130 probably wouldnt be your best option. try something like an RA65, MA61 or an MX73 cressida

alternativly there are a few s13 shells going around and there is an abundance of aftermarket drift parts availible and the 1jz is a reasonably good fit in the engine bay too.

thanks for the post domasik

im sure there are dozens of better chassis' to build on than
the corona, but ive got one lying around in my yard, in
relatively alright conditions (just needs a bit of tlc).

would u know what it is that makes it not a good option for
circuit or drift work? then maybe i can work on fixing those areas

i have a mate who can weld so i reckon we'd be able to cut into the firewall a bit and mount the engine a bit futher back to help with the balance

have u also got the 1JZ?

if not you'd probably be better off going for a 1GGTE with a big single turbo setup similar to josh's KE30, he's putting out 278kw@wheels and the engines are lighter and more room to fit it.

i think the handleing is one of the major issues and would probably cost you alot of money to get the chassis stable. ie coilovers swaybars chassis bracing

ah cool ill look into that

no i dont have a 1jz lying around lol

the only reason i was looking at that was the ease of getting
power/torque.

a smaller capacity engine would have to be more 'highly strung'
to make the same 250kw atw than a lager capacity engine, and it
would have less torque lower in the rev range in order to make
the same power higher up

thanks for that bit of info im gonna have a look around

im not scared of more work, i think it will be a highly...
educational experience, just curious if itll be worth it in the
end if its going to end up costing over an arm and leg JUST
to get the handling right

im not really worried at all about coilovers, swaybars, chassis
bracing cos it will all be neccessary for a competitive
circuit car. also going in will be a full rollcage. the chassis
will definetely need to be strengthened
so if thats the only stopping the car from being a great
handler im not worried at all
