Hail Damage? Wed, 28 September 2005 09:53 Go to next message
Hi everybody,
I came across a car for sale which apparently has "Minor Hail Damage".
Has anybody had any experience with hail? Are these sorts of things easy/cheap to fix? Is it purely a cosmetic thing or could it actually cause problems like rust and/or some form of structural problems?
What should I be looking out for?

I think it could involve some panel beating and possibly a respray, I think it goes on a case buy case basis though, so it could cost a couple of hundred dollars to fix or sevral thousand.

Realy depends on how bad the hail damge realy is, if it is like they say 'Minor' then basicly it would just be dents so no structural damge will come from it.
Rust can form if the hail has chipped the paint and has been left for long enough to rust, so if your interested in this car have a good look over for chips of paint and basicly any other damage. Im not too sure about hail damage, but damage on the pillars and the roof seam to be the hardest or most delicate to pull out.

So basicly just check it out, check for chips of paint and see if any rust has formed if the chips are bad enough.

cheers
chris

note: hail damage on the roof (where if often occurs) is pretty expensive to fix. requires lots and lots of individual fixing of dents, then possibly a respray, plus blending down the a and c pillars.. can get quite exxy.

if its pretty bad on the top, and it hasnt chipped the paint, "paintless dent repair" can fix it pretty cheaply if you can get to the dent from the back (theres no structural stuff behind the dent)

if the dent is where the chssis of the car holds up the sheet metal, you either need to get thedent pulled and resprayed, or bog it up and resprayed.

aussie hail is purely cosmetic, its not big enough to do anything serious.

I'm having a look at it on the weekend. I'm hoping it wasn't hail damage from a few years ago, if you guys recall those maaaassive hail stones that insurance companies raped sydney consumers (without the lube I might mention) for.

if the car looks like a golf ball,it will cost to much to fix.but you can always keep it that way and get a bit more distance over the jumps!lol

My GF owns an AE82 golf ball, we got stuck in hail up in the Blue Mtns last year, her car was straight as an arrow until the storm. The dents do not cause any problems (rust etc), because the car is white they are not too noticeable.

But in the end it's just an AE82 so she hardly cares, and as mick mentioned the dimples have increased it's top end aerodynamics Laughing

Buying a car with hail damage does have insurance implications though.

Insurance implications? Really?

Interesting. I just remembered the "Does the car have any unrepaired damage?" question from my insurance company.

If the damage has been repaired would it affect insurance?

Some insurers will not insure a hail damaged car until it has been repaired.

A car with repaired hail damage should pose no problems.
