With the correct (i.e, 1G -> W5x bellhousing), yes.

I'm amazed at how many people think the IS200 has an alloy block, I hear it from people all over the place! I have no idea where this rumour came from but it's definitely not true; no IS car ever came with an all alloy engine. They all have alloy heads though of course.

Ba-bow.
You go look at the specs of the 1GGE vs the 1GFE and you'll see the 1GFE has more power and more torque (and over a much wider range) than the 1GGE.
Granted this is in stock form, but there aint exactly much aftermarket for the NA 1G's.
And of course, the 1GGTE/ZE is better than both.

The 1G-FE only became "on par" (119kW @ 6200rpm) with the 1G-GE after the introduction of vvti, which to the best of my knowledge wasnt introduced till long after they stopped making 1G-GE's. In the same era the FE is the lesser of the GE as far as iv ever been informed.
I have also read an article (damn i wish i could find it) which claims an all alloy motor in the post 2000 lexus IS2000. This would have to be (one of) the misinformed source of such rumors.

Which i guess brings us back to the point.
1G-GE or 1G-FE conversion, same diff.
But you wouldn bother with FE unless it has vvti heads which i doubt if you're gettin it "for cheap"

Yes, if its not a VVTi 1GFE, then its pretty much worthless.
I made a bad assumption that this guy was talking about VVTi ones.

I didn't know the 1G-FE existed before the VVTi IS200 engine. What were they used in?

Norbie;
1G-FE
The DOHC 1G-FE used a narrow valve angle and other fuel economy optimizations. It was introduced in 1988. Output was 135 hp (101 kW) at 5600 RPM and 130 ft.lbf (176 Nm) at 4400 RPM until VVT-i (introduced in 1998) bumped output to 160 hp (119 kW) at 6200 RPM and 148 ft.lbf (200 Nm) at 4400 RPM for the Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS200, Toyota Crown, Toyota Chaser, Toyota Mark II, and Toyota Cresta.
1G-GE
The 4-valve DOHC 1G-GE was intended for high performance. Produced from 1982 through 1986, mostly for the Japan market, output was 140-160 hp (104-119 kW) at 6200 RPM and 120-134 ft.lbf (162-181 Nm) at 5600 RPM.
Applications:
Toyota Crown
Toyota Soarer
1982-1986 Toyota Celica XX (Japan)
1G-GTE
The 4-valve DOHC 1G-GTE added turbochargers to the mix. Both air-to-air and water-to-air intercoolers were also used, pushing output from 185 to 210 hp (138 to 157 kW) at 6200 RPM and 173 to 203 ft.lbf (234 to 275 Nm) at 3800 RPM.
Applications:
1986–1992 Toyota Supra MK3 (chassis code GA70, JDM only)
1G-GZE
The 1G-GZE was an odd supercharged version produced in 1985 and 1986. Output was 168 hp (125 kW) at 6000 RPM and 167 ft.lbf (226 Nm) at 3600 RPM. Like the turbo, it was a 4-valve DOHC engine.
