MX83 Idle Problems Sun, 25 September 2005 11:11 Go to next message
Hi Guys,

I'm having a few issues with the idle in my MX83 Cressida.
I start the car and let it warm up for 5 minutes,
drove it to the service station, got out bought a coke,
got back in, started it. Heres where the problem started...
the car wouldn't idle and then dies straight away!
I started it 2 more times, and it died each time the same way.
If I use the throttle to keep the idle above 1000 RPM the
engine will stay on, but the second I take my foot off the
throttle, it splutters, the engine light comes on, then it dies.

Any ideas? My mate and I looked at it and nothing seems to
be wrong under the hood (no vaccum hoses broken or anything)
and I can rev it to 6000RPM OK and it all sounds/feels sweet.
I can even floor it while driving and it revs out fine and pulls
all the way to 6500RPM and changes no worries.
Its got a higginbottom rebuilt 7M-GE motor in it with about
8,000kms on it so it should be OK. maybe a TPS sensor or
something?

I really need this car to get to work, so any help would be
sweet.

Cheers,
Bart

C'mon someone must have some ideas?
How can I test the TPS sensor??
What are the pins to connect in the diagnostic block?
And does anyone have a copy of the codes?
email it if neccessary to bart.winter@pulseintl.com.au
I have a copy, but its a bit old and I think incomplete
so anything you have would be sweet.

Does anyone know a good mechanic in Artarmon or Chatswood NSW?

Cheers,
Bart

Artarmon Automotive
63 Whiting Street
Artarmon

Ask for Eddie or Chris

I have been a loyal customer of theirs for years - they recently did a fair bit of work on my 2JZ Cressida and it's going back in there for the suspension fit up and few other bits etc...

Check the Idle speed control valve. Its the funny black loooking thing on the inlet manifold. Mine was faulty when I bought the car and it stalled all the time and would idle at around 300 rpm.

Thanks for the info,

I tried calling Artarmon Automotive, but they are
flat out right now and can't look at it till next week,
so I'll try to fix it myself over the weekend I guess,
if no luck, into the mechanic.

I'll check for leaky airflow meter tonight.
What is the best way of doing this? I'll make sure its tight
and that all the hoses are intact.

With the Idle Speed Control valve, are they easy to replace?
You might be right, cause once I get moving I can floor it
all the way to 6000 RPM with no major issues. The car feels
100% above 1000RPM. I have noticed actually before the car
broke down that when I switch off my lights at night after
driving, the idle used to get a bit irregular for about a sec or
two then would return to normal idle? Maybe this valve has been
on the way out for a while?

Does anyone know about the diagnostic features on the 7M-GE?
Will they be able to tell me more?

Cheers,
Bart

Its pretty easy to replace. Just a couple of bolts and a water line I think. I think they are quite expensive brand new but you should be able to pick one up from the wreckers for not much. Very Happy

I've circled the ISCV

Cheers mumblezzz
you got some pretty trick looking strut towers there dude!
What are they? adjustable or something?
Is that a RED Cressida? or is it just maroon?

I'll check this thing tonight and see if anything is
obviously wrong, cracks, leaks, etc as well as the airflow
meter and all connections between.

Will driving it around do damage?
remember that I have to "ride" the accellerator upto
1000 RPM to keep it running.

cheers,
Bart

To pull the engine codes short T to E1 in the Diag box, then use a small light bulb between +B and W in the Diag box (or a multimeter).

Turn the ignition on and the light should flash the codes (do a search for these).

For the TPS (is MA70, but applies)
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/fi/FI_1 01.html

That link also has the rest of the MA70 TSRM of which the engine sections may help you.

Smile

Wilbo,

That doco is awesome!
I have been looking for something like this for weeks!
I reckon I'll be able to narrow down the possiblilities for
sure now! Save some $$$ in the long run. Very Happy
Thanks again mate. All the diagnostic codes are in there
too! Cool

Cheers,
Bart
