Put the car in neutral with handbrake off and (carefully) jack it up. Spin one wheel and check what the opposite one does.
- Spins the same way = clutch type LSD
- Spins the opposite way = rubbish

not nessecarily.. if it locks but spins locked in the opposite direction it is most likley a viscous coupling lsd..
i had one in the mr2 and it was great on the corners. much more progressive then the clutch pack unit ive got now.. although the tight clutch pack is good for shennanigans

if its a viscous it will not lock until its loaded up depending on how worn it is.
have both wheels up clutch in. gearbox in gear (1st) then turn one wheel. the other wheel should lock and turn in the opposite direction.. but locked...
