You can make it fit and they are much stronger.
The topic has been covered quite a few times so rather than everyone reposting, try using the search function

The R154 is notorious for having a really crappy shift, whereas the w58 (in good nick) is silky smooth. What sort of engine are you running to need a r154?

I think the mods include some friendly meetings between a dirty great big mallet and your transmission tunnel...

maybe if you were stuffing in a 1JZ with a big-single turbo it might be a sensible thing to do (upgrade to r154) - but the W58 is a fairly sturdy gearbox and probably adequate for 7mgte

*nod* for example, josh's 200rwkw 7m didn't break the w58, and it did a lot of kms.
The diff toward the end was mightily cranky, but the gbox is still pretty good (considering it's 20 years old especially)

It can be done and has been done in USA.
Hope this helps for your opinion.

The W58 can take plenty of power, you just need to ease it on and off. Yes, I drive like I'm driving miss daisy, but I still plant it occasionally. After 5 years behind a fair chunk of power and lots of torque the gearbox is still fine... and the the previous owner was nowhere near as gentle as me.
I'm going to be putting close to 250 rwkw through a w58 soon, so I'll let you know how that goes. My bet is that it will be fine, as long as I don't go all Norby on it.
