yeah there is a hole in teh water pump. this is a teltale hole, if you see watter pissing out of this hole it means that your pump is stuffed. they put those holes there to show when the pumps are gone.
if you can get your hands on a pressure tester then pressure test the system and you shhould be able to see where the leak is coming from....it sounds like the leak is pretty big.
do you have to keep topping the radiator up?

FWIW, exactly the same symptoms happened to my 22RE. Likewise assumed pump was stuffed.

i know the 1j is a far superior motor, but shit after just finishing taking off the water pump on the 1j the old 202 had its positives.
Anyone know what good glue to use with the new gasket for the pump.?

the primary reason for the "hole" is to prevent bearing failure from water contaminated lubricant.
you can drive across country with a leaking pump, especially if the system isn't pressurized, but a seized bearing will stop it right now.

Can you do the opposite to the harmonic balancer remover tool and push it in? I think I just gave it some gentle taps with a rubber mallet.
