Hi mate, the rocker cover gaskets become hardened with age. But there is another reason, why they leak, many people either leave the nuts too loose, or quite simply overtighten the nuts. Too loose, and oil will find its way out. Too tight, and the gasket is deformed around the stud, again leaving an escape route for the oil.
Get a new gasket, but before installing, degrease the engine. Use a long thin screwdriver with absorbent rag around the tip, to clean and dry around the spark plugs. Dry out with compressed air, if you have access to a compressor and dusting pistol.
Fit your new gasket, and torque to the Toyota specs.

cheers Chuck.
