st162 5th gear problem

Hi guys and girls,
I have a problem that has recently arisen with my st162 celica.
The problem is that when in 5th gear, and at 100km/h, it sits at about 3000 rpm or a little bit over.
As more speed is added the revs simply rise and rise.
It's like its not engaging 5th, or slipping back to 4th.
I hate to drive it fast now because it feels like its revving the hell out of it.
At first I thought ecu/engine management but now i'm thinking worn 5th gear??
Anyone had this trouble or are able to shed some light, or share some advice?
Cheers

I take it that it's a manual if you have a 5th gear... It would be virtually impossible for it to "slip" back to 4th. If it wasn't engaging into gear it would simply free rev and you'd know about it for sure.
Of course the revs are going to rise as you go quicker and quicker?
What am I missing? Did it used to rev lower?

Yeh 5sp manual.
Yeh it doesn't free rev, it delivers power.
What I'm getting at is when you sit at 100 km/h in top gear in any car, usually the revs will sit aroung 2000 to 2500.
This is because its the biggest gear, no torque is needed and the engine is spinning under little load.
What my car does is seem to rev extremely high, at like 3000 at 100 km/h, and then if you accelerate to 110 km/h the revs will rise to about 3500.
Surely this can't be normal.
Its revving alot harder than it should be.

no thats about normal - i think they sit at about 2800-3000 rpm in 5th - it all depends on the gearing of the car. Some cars sit at about 3500 on 100kmh.
You're fussing over nothing

if your revs are rising quicker then normal perhaps your clutch is slipping ? how does the clutch feel during normal driving ? nice and hard or does it slip ?

Yeah, 3000rpm is no big deal at 100km/h as Stu said

Oh ok thats fine then.
I thought that it was something more, and i'd rather get it out there than leave be, and for it to be doing unknown damage.
It was just that sitting on 100km/h for 50 odd minutes the other day, it just sounded to me like it was revving so hard.
The whole time I thought I was in 3rd, or that there could easily be a 6th gear.
Cheers people for your input..

yeh, my car does 3000rpm at 100km/h
then at 120km/h you should be doing 100/20*3000 = 3600rpm

oh and i it's geared that way is so you can cruise at the place where it makes peak torque, which is what 3200rpm? my understanding is that this is where the engine is most efficient
