icon11.gif  Decent audio setup in st162 anyone? Wed, 19 October 2005 10:55 Go to next message
Hi guys and girls,

Just wondering if anyone has been able to create themselves a decent audio setup in an st162 celica?

I'm looking at mainly setting up the front of my car.

Has anyone been able to get away with just headunit and front speakers with maybe an amp??

Cheers for any help you can give...

ST162's have 3 speaker spots for 4" speakers stock...

2 on the passenger side nexto glovebox, 1 on drivers side below ur air con vent...

im using 3 4" pioneer splits off a XPlod heaunit, it goes pretty well... need some decent rear speakers/sub(s) to make it worth doing though.

If your only going to setup the front then you can only go with 4 inch speakers which suit your st162, you wont really need an amp. Trust me you will never be happy with this. Add an amp for JL 6x9 for a little bass(cant fit in the rear holes though, gotta use that boot cover) or better yet a sub (when looking for a sub at any price look for a larger rubber seal around the speaker, i tested it with a mate small rubber vs thick and they seem to provide better bass) . Your system will only be as good as the amp thats running it.

in the front of my ST162 i have kenwood 4"

rear 420 watt 4 way JBL 6 x 9's

2x 1000 watt poineer subs

and a 1000watt boss amp ($80 off ebay Very Happy)

sounds friggen awsome

think total of around 600 on this system. i've had other stuff aswell over the years dont even wanna think about the total amount of car audio stuff i've bought.

if you decide to upgrade your stuff BE SURE TO SECURE DOWN!! i had a sub and 6x9's stolen out of my old piece of poo pulsar lost about 300 bucks worth of stuff
now my subs are chained down Very Happy

i've always thought about maybe trying to fit a set of those 6 inch speaker mounts onto my doors somewhere. considered maybe cutting some of the bottom plastic holder thing off bottom of the door, and half moulding/shove + polly filler the 6" mount.
its alot of work just for a set of speakers though

my 2c

Do you have manual or power windows?

Unless you spend ridiculous amounts of cash 4" are best left to 15khtz + (no bass).

I suggest, custom MDF rings or pods to mount six inch coaxials in the doors. Or else you could go splits and use the doors & the 4" spots, but this will lower the soundstage more than if you mount a tweeter near the a-pillar.

Rear treble is a waste of money in my opinion. Who goes to a concert and faces the back of the room? But you need bass, it reverberates through your car and gives more even dB, rather than source focused sound. That is why most setups chuck a couple of woofers in your boot.

Tell me your budget, and what you like to listen to - bass notes, vocals, guitar solo's etc...

Also, i think there is an audio section. U mite wana use it in future and keep the guru's happy Wink

Really don't want to go to the effort of cutting up my doors.
I'll probs just wack some 4" splits in the front holes.

I was considering using the rear strut towers cover spots but I didn't really know what I could fit in there.
There didn't seem to be that much room in there when I took the covers off.

As for a subwoofer, nah probably not, even though it will be a huge reduction in bass...

Cheers
