the gearbox has recently been crunching when i change to third too quickly, I think it might be the synchro, has anyone had similar problems? wonder how much it'll cost to replace synchro

Your wondering or are you asking. 3rd gear crunches is not common thing, at least I don't think it is. Is your clutch slipping?

Slow down your changes?
Sounds like the synchro is getting worn, probably from too harsh a shifting. When was the oil last changed?

the mechanic seems to think that the clutch wearing may cause it? last time my clutch was buggered it barely grabbed a gear.

if its the clutch sticking then it would probably do it in every gear.
if its isolated to one gear its probably synchros or something.

I think its synchros, i had the clutch done about a year ago and it was a bit tight at first but as it wears the gears should change more easily right?

Supra's that have 6 speeds are Getrag type! VERY durable and can stand harsh throws!
to say it crunches means its been driven hard or raced frequently, coz even mild abuse can be tolerated well with these boxes.
It is most probably the syncros, and yes it will be expensive to fix!

Thats why i'm surprised its doing it, i've never raced it although the clutch was fried when i bought it, had 57000km on the clock, its non-turbo though, no power that would ever damage a six speed.

ok well...
you see, only the twin turbo version came with 6 speed boxes. non-turbo's have 5 speed stock. so the G/B has been changed!
this still means the GB could have been thrashed in the old car, or the owner that put in the 6speed took advantage of the stronger 6 box and hence the fried clutch aswell, at 57,000km's its uncommon for any car to have worn clutches, let alone a Toyota, and a Supra at that!!!
let us know how it goes!

Not entirely true: the '96 SZ-R had a six speed manual, it took me a long time to figure that out when trying to get a clutch replacement.
