timing a 3sgte Sun, 23 October 2005 07:41 Go to next message
ive just replaced a few things in the engine, im just double checking

bring the cam slits closest to the cam gears around to line up with the drill mark in the number 1 cam cup, put the cam gears on so the drill mark lines up with the mark on timing cover #3..

crank, not to sure hard to get down there and have a look so if anyone has done this can you confirm that , that is the correct way to retime the heads components, and some info on bringing the crank round to tdc

thanks

Set the crank to TDC... i.e. the mark on the harmonic balance at zero on the timing cover.
Set the two cams so that the marks point to the two ribs on the dust cover thingy (i.e. straight upwards)

yer ive had the cam gears off the cams, i had to remove the cams, theyve gone back in the same way they came out, the crank and cams remain in the same spot that they came out on, but if i bring the crank round to tdc, the cams would need to come round which brings me back to the slits in the cams and the drill marks on the cups, yer cam gears like you said the books, faq's etc tell me this but the only place i can see that it mentions slits in the cams has to do with valve timing, this would need to be done also to time the cams do the gears and crank correct?

i would think so anyway or the cams would be out of timing to the crank
