4K Performance Problems... anyone had these before?

Hey all..
Just wondering if anyone has had any running issues with their 4K, like a miss that occurs when you apply load to the engine (open the throttle) then smooths out gradually as engine rpm increases. It plays up like this when you apply load to the engine between 1500rpm and around 4500rpm.
Anyone got any idea of what is going on?
I have put a GT40R bosch coil in
Plugs are 12months old (but look fine)
Leads are good
Carby has been reco'd
no vac leaks
thanks,
kane

plug gap too large (close it down to 0.8 or 0.75mm)
a little too much timing.. what static timing do you have?
try knocking it back by 5 deg and see if it has the same problem..
oh, and buy new plugs..
NGK BP5EY or NGK BP6EY (or S instead of Y)
oh and if you haven't bought ignition leads int he last year, get new ones..
oh, and the orange coils suck a little.. if you haev jaycar HEI, remove the bosch orange coil IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!
if you are not running HEI, set points gp to 0.2mm (and remember to check it every month)

There's a little rubber boot around a vertical pin on the top of the carby. There's a lever, that when you accellerate presses on the very top of the pin. That pin is the plunger that squirts a little extra fuel during accelleration. Bend the tab down slightly until the bogging down stops.

could be the the accelerator pump (the vertical pin you refer to )
but that usually causes a cut, not a miss..
bending the tab down (where the linkage to the throttle shaft is) will result in a smaller shot of fuel, not a larger one...
to get more fuel, you bend it up, so that the accelerator pump starts in a higher position..
be aware that this can drastically change fuel consumption, esp in city driving!!

No, not running hei.
Timing is set at 10°+
The bosch coil hauls ass i dont know why you call it shit.. better than a fucken stock lucas one for sure.
I actually looked into getting a nippondenso coil from grand toyota up here but nah.. 45$ trade price fuck that.
As i wrote above, the carby has been overhauled; A new accelerator pump was installed (you normally do in an overhaul of an aisan carby) as this comes in the carby kit.
Myne, you are right it seems to be running a little too rich, bending the tab DOWN might be the go
Yea changed the plugs today (thats how i know it was running a little rich)
Did not ahve NGK plugs at workshop today, grabbed some bosch ones. (same fuckn diff)
Still doing the same thing and i know the leads are good. (points are 1 month old)
thanks,
kane

the bosch coils suck because when you put the HEI on them, they last for 1 to 2 weeks
witht he HEI, car runs smoother, better everywhere.. and the original KE10 coils i had lasted longer than the bosch coil
$45 is too much
oh.. the carbs always run rich. tried playing witht he idle mixture? removed the high speed flap yet?

oh well, i dont have electronic ignition.. might try to get it later on but not at this stage (5k motors came with electronic ignition?) might have to go to a wreckers and find one. For now though, the gt40R will be fine.
The only reason your stock KE10 coil lasted longer was becasue it wasnt a high performance coil (or you put the wrong one on or wired it up wrong)
Yea idle mixture is ok.. high speed flap.. never heard of it.. is that just your secondary throttle plate? if so the secondary plate is opening at mega high rpm (we're talking 5500 on a 4k)
For HEI, use a bosch GT40 not a resistor type one if you did.
Bosch is one of the best parts suppliers i've come across.. and i work in an auto electrics shop.. their starters and alternators are a piece of piss - but also reliable.

kane

Jaycar HEI..... works with points jst as well as both my internal and external ignitor 4KE and 5K dizzies (which were brand new from toyota )

LOL, that must be it i've used bosch black "electronic" coils, same shape as the GT40's and they work well, i've used Lucas electronic oil coils,... i've tried many coils
the only two that failed were the GT40 and GT40R .
and Silicon chip put out a correction a few articles later saying that SPECIFICALLY the orange Bosch GT40 coil would fail with the longer dwell time... and it does... i'm not knocking bosch, just those two coils (GT40 and GT40R) cannot handle longer than points dwell time
High speed flap... the one that has the counterweight on it.. sits above the secondary throttle flap...

sorry Kane, that doesn't do it for me
i'm just sharing my experience, and the recommendations later published by silicon chip..
and if you check the box o the GT40 series, it says they are specifically for points.. they are NOT to be used with elec ignition or they should

by all means, dont get the wrong idea - obviously you and i have had different experience with bosch components (gt40 and R) - I have points ignition in my ke70 4k and i find no reason to think the coils are shit, if bosch recommends them for my car, i'll get it.. if it *ucks out.. well i'll share your opinion and gather the same experience but for now.. i think it's good quality. I have honestly never seen a bosch gt40 coil fu*k out in my 3 years man.
I only said i worked in an auto electrics shop to basically tell you that i have seen heaps of gt40s in escorts and all sorts of cars and have not had one of them play up. tradesmen there will tell you the same thing man. Maybe you just got duds or something. (unlikely, but possible)
You'd think they would stop production or attempt to rectify the coil problems claimed by the magazine (maybe they did???)
So your 5k dizzy isnt electronic?
will check that flap tomorrow? is it esay to remove?
My gap is .8mm i think or 1.2 just standard bosch gap for 4kc plug.
thanks

both 4K and 5K dizies were electronic. both brand new.
4K has external ignitor.
5K has internal ignitor.
i also use a K denso dizzy with the HEI as it has external base advance adjustment.
yes, easy to remove. just take out screws and leave shaft. maybe wire up the linkage so it doesn't get in the way.
for electronic assisted ignition, i would recommend 0.8mm
for points ignition, 0.65-0.7mm
1.2mm is far too large for a small coil to jump, and it results in missing issues as the spark gets blown out or doesn't ignite the mixture properly.
this is based on my build up experience of about 5 or 6 years ago, and found the issue most at highway speeds when the motor was loaded up more.
if you are hapy with the coil, then good.
but the first mod i recommend to people for even stock K motors is to get a Jaycar HEI to use with the points, as it will be the basis for all other performance gains. YMMV

Hey old corollas... you have any idea where abouts on the carby the vacuum advance for dizzy goes? The guy who owned my car before me bypassed or removed the diaphragm i think? i dont even know if it has/had one. I put a new pigtail lead onto the advance plate, the old one snapped.. but yea i think i may have the vacuum advance on the wrong vac outlet from the carby
you have any ideas?
Yea i check points once every month or so..
maybe i should bend the gap down to .7mm?
I will stick with the gt40r as i do not have jaycar HEI (might get it in a while or if this coil fu*ks out.
Yea the dizzy has the base adjustment which is, i agree, good as and very simple to adjust.
September_squall.. your opinon is not appreciated as i do not have HEI.
thanks,
kane
