in 2004. i replaced my cat last year after the inside collaped.

THEN in sept 2005, only Mad Mad about 2 months ago the cat blew again, i also found all these carbon deposits inside the resonator (hotdog) thing.
the exhaust man said my car was probibly running too rich, which is why the cat went.
so i got a bigger cat and a new resonator too.
(i also got a new map sensor and tried testing the O2sensor)

and NOW today, less than 1500kms since the new cat was fitted, it blows AGAIN Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

im soo pissed off about my cars taste for cats Mad Mad Mad

WTF is going on, can you guys please help me

Mang, I could make some tops jokes about cars destroying cats...

Or I could just voice my opinion that yep, it sounds like your car is running way rich and cooking the bugger.

my car has stuffed 2 cats aswell

these days the cats are made from cheap shit stuff

i heard this from an exhaust fitter guy

he told me to get good 2nd hand ones from factory cars

they are much better quality and last for ages

for a cat to be stuffed my being rich it has to be super rich or super lean where the extreme heat from being lean can melt them too

but if yr mixtures are ok then it just might be shit quality cats

a) blocks up with combustion particulate reducing zorst gasflow - so yes, a performace hit
b) gets red hot from accumulate combustion particulates burning - fire risk
c) core disintegrates and tries to make its way noisily out the zorst system in sections - clink ting clink

it's the heat of combustion of the fuel inside the cat that causes the problems...

lean mixtures are a bit hotter coming out of the engine, but nothing compared to the heat generated by burning fuel!!!

fwiw, i have run catalytic convertor material in furnaces for.... 4 years? 5 years? CONTINUOUSLY at 400 degrees C and they are still perfect.

they should be able to withstand around 600degC and still live (you may start to see the metal glowing at night if it is 600C)

you can tell its screwed because it makes a very awful noise. mine sounds like as if its a turbo full of rocks coming on boost.

also it sometimes gives off that rotten egg smell, which its the metals inside the core burning.
and performance feels very sluggish

with my first cat the metallic core disintegrated into a few large peices

with the second cat the glue stuff that holds the core inside the metal housing melted causing a big rattle

oh,

today i got another cat for free as it was still under warranty Laughing Laughing Laughing

the manufacture tested for carbon and fuel deposits.
there was no such presence of such chemicals.

i guess it must be a dodgy cat

but to go through so many cats, one would think there is a problem.

have you tried a high flow cat? the greater surface area might solve stop it from over heating.
