Dog box= dog teeth engagement. Not snychromeshed engagement.

Noisy is because spur cut gears (Straight cut).

Angle cut is helical
You can have a dog box straight or angle cut.

Straight cut dog you would find in super tourers V8 supercars indys F1 and rallies.

Or there is semi Helical like the gearset in my gearbox.

http://www.quaife.co.uk/catalogue/pics/gloss_gears1_p7.gif

But here is a good picture to what were all talking about
Top left is syncro engagement, top right is dog engagement
bottom right is straight cut, middle is semi helical, and left is helical.

oh... didnt see al these extra posts.
Interesting.... bit confusing for a novice though.
What is the advantaged of dogteeth as stated they seem to be found in race cars.
Are they more prone to grindage?
