You can run unleaded, toyotas have had hardened vavle seats long before 1986.

choose your own adventure

1. PULP 95 octane, no adjustments. EDIT Standard timing 5° at 900 rpm
2. ULP 92 octane, need to retard timing, i can't remember correctly, but it may be 5 degrees. EDIT Modified timing 0° at 900 rpm

1. You drive off happy into the sunset with full power.
2. You lose all of diddly squat and are still happy because it's a LASRE 4A!!!

EDIT:
here's the info Very Happy

unless you have an engine that's different to the one supposed to be in the sprinter i.e. a version of the 4A-C from somewhere else i dun see why it should be pinging.

you can run it with up to 15 degrees timing at just 91 octane. If it pings at high revs the engine is tired.

Just put 91 and make sure it's tuned correctly i.e. 5 degrees at 900 RPM (850 if it's not dying is fine), and set the fuel mixture on the carbie. check the carbie is good i.e. flow and float, change stem seals if you have to and it should be good.
My mate had to clean out his carbie coz the petrol in it b4 was shocking, clogged up a fair bit of the fuel inlet.

I was in the same situation as you before. I placed normal unleaded in the 4ac although it didnt run too well. I suggest you use premium petrol with the valve saver/leaded substitute. But I never knew the engine had hardened seals.
