Idle, stalling and fouled spark plug problem on 7mgte Sun, 13 November 2005 07:03 Go to next message
Ok.

FInally got my car back from the exhaust shop after it has been there for 5 weeks of stop / starting.

It developed the inability to start easily and would require alot of cranking to start, but with revs it seemed fine.

It would stall if i didnt apply any revs and wouldnt idle.

I pulled the plugs (NGK Irridiums) and they were fouled with carbon badly so i cleaned them up and put them back in.

Fired up almost first go.....ran for a little bit, reved fine, then when left it started to idle very badly, i checked the fuel pressure and it seemed to fluctuate a minor amount.

The fuel pump noise seemed to fluctuate in time with the revs as well.

it stalled and ive left it for now.

Running aftermarket ecu and stock ignition.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Is it just a case of fouled irridums from the stop start driving and i need to bin those for more plugs?

ta, guys.

Should be able to save the iridiums.
How did you clean them? Just carby/throttle body cleaner?

Yes, numerous starts without drive will easily foul plugs.
Especially if its running richer than factory (depends how good your cold start tune is).

You really need to take it for a 'belt' to clean the insides out from these numerous starts.
Cruise down the freeway @ 100 for a good 20-30mins should do it.

actually cleaned them with inox because thats all i had.

no chance of highway driving to clean them out, still unregistered.

Another point that has been raised is a blocked fuel filter?

your runing a piggy back POS ecu? and you left it with the keys at an exhaust shop?

FARK!!! your brave!

you REALLY need to look at your plugs if there oil or fuel coked

if its oil i'd say the exhauts shop took your car for a "test drive"

if its fuel i'd say your ecu needs looking at and adjusting of the cold start enrichment values

Plugs are fuel coked.

Car has no plates and wasn't taken for a test drive.

Autronic SM4 is no piggyback and it is controlling the idle.

ok well your not so brave Razz

you need to get your cold start maps in order, the fuel pump speeding up and slowing down is because its idling too slow for the alternator to charge

chuck some std plugs in it while yr sorting it out

tiny tipped plugs dont like being fouled and sometimes take ages to clean up

then i think u just need to get the tune redone for cold start and idle

how much did u pay for the tune anything under 300 bucks is probably only 80% right

there is so much adjustments u can do on the sm4
a usual dynotune to get it perfect migth be anything up to 800 bucks goin by the prices ive heard people pay

but get the thing registerd first
i dont know why people fit aftermarket ecus to unreg cars
makes it very difficult to sort things out

anyway just do what u can

90% of the tunes i here people get done to aftermarket ecus have fukt cold start and idle and cruise tunes

i tell people 70% of driving is at idle and cruise so for best economy this should be where the tuner spends most of the time

not at full throttle which is usually easier to tune

I replaced 8 piggybacks with 1 aftermarket ecu because it was the easy thing to do.

The idle was rough before it went to the exhaust shop but alot better.

The battery also went flat in the time it sat there.

Is it also a possibility the ecu has had the cold start reset? or that the new increased flow exhaust has created idle issues?

Never heard of an ecu resetting itself.
I highly doubt the exhaust has changed the idle at all.

Do at sideshow suggested, spend $18 on a set of NGK coppers, then see how she starts cold.

Chances are it will be perfect (or as perfect as your tuner made it).
Put the iridiums back in when you start driving it more regularly.

ok, well i put a bottle of redex engine flush through the motor and apart from creating a SHITLOAD of smoke, the situation is no better.

It seems that the car will start on the cold start settings and as soon as the temp gets up to operational it switches maps, the revs drop and the car stalls.

Restart the car and it idles for no more than 2 secs before dying.

Im going to check the plugs now and do an oil change to get that redex shit out.

But could the new exhaust throw the tuned map out that much at warm idle? surely not...

Never heard of that happening, not at idle anyway (unless they fucked up the exhaust, or the previous one was fucked?)

Drop in or call the dyno shop tomoz.
If you can load up a lappie try and find out if its stalling from too rich, too lean, lack of spark.
