Open Port for 20V Black Top

Hi, a mate of mine is very convinced in his theory that for a stock Black Top 20V 4AGE engine, you can remove the intake plenum and run with the 4-throttles with open-port configuration without having to tune it.
If that is not the case, how hard is to tune to get it runing perfectly?

According to a g-tech:
AE82 blacktop 20v with full factory airbox = 15.2
AE82 blacktop 20v with open throttles = 15.7
You can feel the engine surging without the airbox, i don't know why but it's definitely slower, with open throttles on a stock ecu.

Is it true to my understanding that, the response and power at the lower end range in the rpm will have to sacrifice for this setup but you can pull up to a higher limit in the rpm?
if I get a full stand-alone ecu, is it going to solve all the problems that might occur?
please help me clarify this, thanks a lot guys

with the right tuning (haltech/ autronic/ motec) and a good cold air feed with alum shielding (to protect against heatsoak) :
response and torque will be greater over the entirety of the rev range
power will be greater over the entirety of the powerband

years ago on an engine dyno we found 11bhp at the top end and no loss anywhere with the right length ram tubes on a 20v.

What about if you added a bonnet scoop for some cold air to feed in would this help minimise heat soak.

yes, how ever there is a substantial power loss involved in removing the surge tank.
however if using the correvt style trumpets it may be ok....
but i find it interesting that TRD, TOMS and other race teams all used surge tanks.....
