Yep they can make them off the barrel.
Just take out the keybarrel in your door to make life easier for the locksmith.

On the back (or maybe the side) of the door lock barrel on the drivers side there will be a number (My VL had a 5 digit number)
It's not on the boot, or the passenger side locks, cause I removed both of them first and got pissed off...
If you take that number to the locksmith he can make you up a few keys. It cost me 20 bucks.

if they are original locks, a good locksmith can make a new key simply from the VIN number...
a mate did this for me for an Audi a while back..

i rang a locksmith and he said he could come out and make an ignition key for around $180 and the door aswell would be nother $70..the ignition barrel had to be changed for blue slip cause the key fell out while driving apparntly..and id also need another key for the boot..
i rang the guy in my lunch break and within 30mins my brother who was at home msgd me and said i found ur keys...
i knew as soon as i gave up on finding them and looked at other ways of fixing the prob they would show up..and they did...
