they cannot be sold. only transfered to someone in your family with the same surname. what you can do is cancel them, and have someone apply for them straight after but ofcourse they will have annual fees.

could you get around this rule?
Couldnt you "sell your car to buyer"
buyer transfers plates from his/her car, and then sells the car back to you with their old plates?
just list the car as being sold for a few hundred bucks to avoid massive fees etc.
bit of mucking around, but if I didnt have plates already I would be doing it for sure!
Good luck!

yeah i spose you could, but you would end up with alot of transfer fees. i cant remember how much exactly it costs to transfer over rego, but if you wanted the plates and you can be trusted, why not Smile

I beleive that if i put them in hold i can then give permision for to somebody else to but them out of ther RTA for the Rta fee of approx $150 + the price of the plate.

That's what i have been told a while ago

imagine this:
sell your car to buyer of plates for $100 (to avoid large stamp duty)
buyer says "thankyou" and drives away in your car, which he now owns.

that will learn ya for giving him the keys. Very Happy

no you cant put them on hold and sell them to someone else. i had plates on hold, someone who wanted to buy them and they could not be transfered into that persons name. now my brother has the plates as they are allowed to be swapped within family.

yeah, your a dam fool it you give them the keys!
You would only have to go down to the RTA with the rego papers and pretend you had sold the car, and they would be none the wiser!
