Is it on the firewall plate?

It will probably be A01A or A02A

It has an open-wheller diff though I just wanted to check the actual gearing? is this 3.90? or 3.23??? Confused

Im planning to swap a Torsen centre with 4.11 gearing and wanted to know the difference......

Hey Cruzida,

While on the subject of toyo diff ratios,
what ratio is my MX83??? (open-diff 90' model)
Which is the best ratio for drifting?? higher or lower?
I have about 3 crown-wheels at home from hilux g-series diffs
and I should be able to mix and match them into my mx83 housing right?

Cheers,
Bart

I have checked the site you gave me against my MX83
cressida's Axle Code and from these two,
if I am right then I get the following...

A340E G312
A340E = Gearbox?
G = 8" Ring Gear
31 = 3.909 Ratio
2 = 2 Pinion, No LSD.

Is that website reliable though?
Is the 3.909 ratio good enough?
When I get the centre out, should I change ratios??

While on this subject, I have already aquired a hilux 4x4 LSD G series for free.
But then I remembered, Isn't the hilux G-series got an 8.5" Centre?
I fitted an ARB air locker to the front and rear of my gen3 hilux
about 2 years ago and the front centre was visually smaller than the rear.
I remember something about the ARB guy saying my model have the
smaller 8" centre in the front diff.
maybe only gen 1 and gen 2 luxies have the 8" front and back??

Are there 2 types of G-series?
I checked the ARB website for air-locker applications, and it says there are a few different sizes than those on the motorcity website??

http://www.arb.com.au/alac/alsp/0-00.pdf

Is it possible to use the larger diff centre with the larger bearings?? This would be good for longevity.

Cheers,
Bart

The website is reliable. As for whether the ratio you have is "good enough", only you can answer that question.

All G series diffs have an 8" ring gear. 4WD Hilux's with IFS have a G series rear diff (8") and F series front diff (7.5").

You are right Norbie,
I posted same topic up on my 4wd forum to confirm exactly
what other diffs are available as far as the off-road toyota gurus are concerned...

As said by Norbie,
the IFS front diff is the smaller f-series on all pre-96 models
running IFS suspension up front.

The solid axle 4wd's have 2 x G-series 8" centres in them.
The difference in size is apparently due to the Carrier Bearings...

4WDs with IFS = Front 7.5" (F-Series)
Rear 8" (50mm carrier bearing)

4WDS with solid axles = Front 8" (43mm carrier Bearing)
Rear 8" (50mm carrier Bearing)

4WDs after 2003 with IFS = Front only 8" (53mm carrier Bearing)

What I want to know is, what size carrier bearings are used
in the MX83 G-series 8" centres?

Cheers,
Bart

I can't tell you exactly at the moment but my Parts CD says the carrier bearings are the same at 70 series Supra(obviously),20 series Soarer and also 100 series V8 or turbo diesel Landcruiser. Not many locally delivered vehicles came with them. Toyota want a fortune for them(nearly $200 for the pair).

Non-LSD and LSD use the same bearings, from what my EPC tells me.

Front and rear pinion bearings are standard Hilux bearings and are cheap as chips, and easy to find.

I'm taking my spare MX83 IRS Non-LSD housing to work tommorow to work out exactly what the carrier bearing sizes are. My LSD in my MX83 is whining a little (sounds like pinion bearings) so I'm gonna find exactly what the carrier size is before I rip apart the LSD housing.
I can then reference the size to the various bearing catalogues that we have. I'm sure there will some aftermarket units available easily.

Thanks mate,

that would be a huge help.
If they are off a 100 series landcrusier I can probably
get them a bit cheaper for us as I have alot of 4WD contacts,
so it would be interesting to see which size the MX83
uses. Take pics if you can, cause I'll probably be doin
the same thing to compare what is in my hilux LSD.

Cheers,
Bart

Hey Macro P,

Any progress with pulling that Non-LSD diff of yours apart?
Trying to work out what to do with this LSD hilux centre.

Cheers,
Bart

Shit I forgot, it's still rolling around in my boot. I'll have a go tommorow by taking the rear cover off.
