Hi,

The Leyland P76 (god knows how it got to be COTY, except it reinforced my opinion that Wheels magazine is crap), the Tasman Kimberly, Marina, Ford Landau and the Datsun 200SX wasn't real good either.

Hi,

Yeah the Landaus (he had two) my dad had were crap. The engines and gearbox were fine but the body work, power windows, air con and all those little things were forever breaking and giving us trouble. And they rusted bad, especially around the fenders and under the rear taillight area.

He then went and bought a 770 Charger. That was a nice car, but he always regretted selling the Kombi - especially after mum painted flowers all over it and made it look special.

Arhh. That sounds more like it.

So in summary the 8-6 = a little gem and the 8-6 owner = teh suck

Glad we cleared that up, I would hate to see the price of sprinters drop down close to their actual value.

Yeah true, I remember that years ago, leaking soft tops, shit house chassis rigidity, crap quality all round etc.

They are popular now though for young fags around these parts because they are cheap and for some reason these pretty boys think that cruising around with your pretty boy mate looking like a pair of homosexuals in your capri convertible with cheap chrome 17's will pull da laydies.... Rolling Eyes

I agree that SOME alfa's have serious rust problem's but then so does every car if you dont be careful of where you park, if its a coastal vehicle or inland vehicle, any car can rust!

You havnt seen a rust bucket till you,ve seen a neglected british

Hmmmm... Modern Capri's were a failure in every way, but I actually don't mind some of the really old capris. As for Fiats and alfas, they are lurvely cars (the old ones at least), but the gearboxes are cantankerous in a few models...

oldcorollas, I had actually noticed that spiffy bosch ignitor under the bonnet of larry (MY Lada). The multipoint EFI Ladas actually had an air of sophistication about them, although still massively underpowered. Neglecting the factory installed drivetrain vibration (fixable with a CV installed in the intermediate drive shaft) and the very VERY dodgy electrics, Niva's were actually on a pedestal with range rovers and the Jensen interceptor as one of the first vehicles with a full time AWD system... Shame they stuck with the same design from the late 1960's through to 1997!

Another dodgy car in terms of build quality seems to be the AU Falcon.

Ford F6 Typhoon.

Ever single one sold was recalled for a full engine rebuild, taking upwards of 6 months for people to get their vehicles back. Kinda serves them right for releasing a car which wasn't tested properly to begin with. Dodgy diffs, boxes and engines... what a combo!

Here just a few that come to my mind, and no i dont think the excel is a lemon despite how much I hate them.

Anyting built by Leyland BMC including the famous Range Rover

The Stafire VC Commodore
EA I Falcon
Rover (cant think of the model, but the one the was a knock off of the Accord)
TM Magna
Morris Major and Oxford - just junk
Holden Drover
Holden Camira
Chyrsler Centura
Ford Festiva
Nissan 300zx
Datsun 200B
Subaru Vortex
Daewoo Eclero
Triumph Dolomite and Herald

I thought the Landau was a good car and the issue of rust was just as bad in other 2 door cars of the era

Hi,

The rust in the Landau wasn't severe, but it was everpresent. The biggest problem was the interior trim - things would fall off and switches wouldn't work. I liked the car though, it looked big and tough and it cruised along beautifully.

As for the Capris.... I only liked the old ones. If I had the time, money and space I wouldn't mind getting an old V6 Capri and restoring it back to original.

Hi,

The Leyland P76 (god knows how it got to be COTY, except it reinforced my opinion that Wheels magazine is crap)...

Ah but it was the V8 Leyland P76 that won, not the straight 6! Small but significant detail. And the annual Lemon trophy(ies) is(are) actually modelled on the P76!

Commo's are ok except for the Starfire 4 (which was the 6 with 2 cylinders lopped off). Also made it's way into Toyota Corona's(???).

F6 Typhoon was a clutch problem, and a problem that only took millions of dollars of time testing to find out why. 3 little clips broke under certain conditions only present with the turbo 6, which prompted worldwide support for a new design in twin-plate clutches. Engine probs hear nothing about.

My contributions: XL - XM Falcon. Straight import from US meant it's front end collapsed all over the place 'cause it couldn't handle harsh Aussie conditions yet Aussie designed & engineered Holden's just kept soldiering on.

Anything that's Series I from Holden & Ford. EA Falcon, VN Commodore. AU Series I brakes were shite, broke down on cops all the time.

That's all I can think of for now...
