Starlet GT Tue, 25 February 2003 11:26 Go to next message
Hello,
Im looking at getting a Starlet GT, BUT have no idea!
1) Is it a good car?
2) Can they be serviced in Melbourne without costing an arm and a leg? Razz
3) Whats insurance like for over 25s?
4) Anything else?

Thanks in advance

The starlet GT's are a damm nice car! I was nearly going to get one but i'm not a fan of FWD's! This is the only thing that put me off!

Amongst the 3 cars I like, this is one of them (the other 2 is the MX5 and the AE86 I drive). Surprised

If you read HOT 4s, you will know that these cars have awesome potential.

Believe that their project Starlet was within top 5 fastest FWD in Australia at one point and was a killer in the corners in a couple of rallies.

Insurance wouldn't be so bad and parts such as suspension are interchangeable with the Aussie Starlets.

My only gripe is that they are FWD ... Confused

Insurance will be the same as any other import turbo!!!

Either unrealisticly expensive or not available at all.

As far as insurance companies are concerned. If its imported they hike the premium as parts are harder/more expensive to get.

If its a Turbo they hike the premium again as it is more of a risk to have an accident.

actual engine capicity and the fact that it is a hatchback fwd doesn't really come into it.

EDIT: sorry missed the over 25 bit...your lucky. Actually thats not really luck at all, just older.

i like them but if you are looking for more power don't atmosphere the wastegate. I new a fella that did this, his car was very quick running about 20psi with everything stock except exhaust. He went through 3 engine rebuilds and 3 new gearboxes. word of warning!

service it yourself

insurance would be ok because you are over 25, still dearer than a 'normal' car though.

that is all

Thanks all,

Geez guys whats the matter with FWD??? I spose im a bit biased coz thats all ive really driven!! FWD kick ass going round corners, specially in my mini!

I gather the aussie starlets come out with the 4E-FE engine, so parts would be ok, except the turbo?

Its a general warning though that increasing boost will shorten the life of an engine, isnt it?

Cheers
Andrew

That goes with all turbo engines

On at different note, I saw a Starlet GT at the local Drift King today! Damm it was sweet looking, it had clear/chrome rear lenes fitted and it made me feel like selling my TA22 and buying a Starlet to do up!

/me thinks about a 3S-GTE in a Starlet

These guys here are building one as well. (their V8 Lolux is quite interesting too)

Really wouldn't want one on the street. can you say TORQUE STEER?
