7M-GTE electrical power Fri, 02 December 2005 15:15 Go to next message
Hey guys

Have an oddness about my 7mgte ma61. When I put the clutch in to change gears etc, and the revs are dropping, the battery/alternator power also drops (volt gauge registers a drop from approx 13.5-14v normal to just under 12 or at 12v, and headlights/interior dome etc dip in brightness) and the revs die down to about 400rpm (instead of usual 600rpm) for a few seconds. The car will have a brief spasm as if it will stall, but then it's fine.

Thing is, it doesn't do it all the time- more often than not, but its a bit weird.

Initially I though it may have been an intake leak (or intake related) but with the advent of this electrical power drop I'm a bit confused.

Playing with the idle speed screw doesn't do anything Sad Laughing

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

You got a venting BOV? When I had the hybrid job on my 7M it used to do that. Not sure about the electrical power loss though, but it did drop in revs when it ran uber rich.

Nah just the stock BOV, but it flutters when going WOT, so maybe it's stuffed.

also, the three hoses that run into the black intake pipe have been hacked into 2 on my car- (i have an aftermarket intake pipe, wouldn't mind a stock one) so maybe thathas something to do with it, poor airflow/wrong pressure or something etc.

but yeah, the electrical thing?

Check the battery cables and earths.
Build up of shit and a bad earth can cause such issues.

Also check the alternator belt tension.

If you are talking about the pipe I think you are (AFM to turbo) one of those is the feed for the idle control valve...

If that is not drawing air past the AFM it may cause erattic running at idle... the slower engine speed, along with maybe a weak battery or altenator may account for the power drain???

Have you checked for any "open" vac lines? or listened around for air leaks??
Also another 7M fave is water around the plug tops!

I would also say give the earths and altenator contacts a quick once over...
