Intake manifolds are not at all the same on the GE.

Gen1 is the old T-VIS 143hp that was in the ST162. Gen2 is the 156hp engine with ACIS instead of T-VIS, and here in Sweden it has the oil squirters under the pistons.

(Gen1 and 2 GTE both have T-VIS intakes, but not gen2 GE)

Heavily revised intake, higher compression ratio and higher revving are all responsible for the power gains. Even larger than the peak power gains though are the torque gains, 30% more torque at 400 less rpm!

Gen 2
165hp / 6800 rpm
19.5 kg*m / 4800 rpm

Gen 1
137hp /6600 rpm
15.2 kg*m / 5200 rpm

what comp does the gen2 have, i have heard 10.2 and another told me 10.5 . Which is true, does it depend if it was a celica or MR2 gen2 engine??
