car amp problem Tue, 06 December 2005 05:09 Go to next message
hi having a problem with my 1000W boss amp.

recently the 12V power cable came out of my amp and earthed out on the amp, (main fuse blew after that) after replacing the fuse the amp doesnt seam to want to power up.

the amp is getting power as the fan cooling system starts up. just the acuatll amp wont come on with the head deck. is it possible the 12v cable has shorted out the "remote" wire?

any ideas??

Yeah it would be the remote wire. Try changing the remote wire, its possible that it got shorted. Or maybe your headunit is damaged.

mm interesting have you opend the case are there any other fuses that could have blown??
Does the unit smell funny at all inside like melted plastic burned? Did it cook anything?
maybe get a length of wire and use it like trail and error test to see if and wires are burned out or broken...
then if these fail ring around see if there is a place that maybe able to repair it tell the storey you may be better off keeping the cash to get it looked at and putting it towards a new unit..
Qu?? how long was the 12v cable sitting on the case for, knowing that most amps use the casing as a heat sink it is probably a high risk that you have done some extensive work to the internals considering the power up to 12v you pumped in reverse through it.. sorry bro this maybe bad news

good luck

Huh? Short circuit, reverse polarity, different things.

Havabeer,

Dont wana be the bearer of bad tidings, but i beleive there is a reason you get no tech support and letters like you have from BOSS audio. They know full well that their product is about bang for buck, not quality.

They arent about to write you a letter that says;

Regretably our target market is entry level audio enthusiasts who want the power and excitment car audio systems bring, but who do not have bottomless pockets, and are not quite discerning enough to pick up the average sound quality.

As such we build amplifiers that will produce excellent power for the price you pay. However to acheive this, we have had to make sacrifices. Namely, cheaper circuitry components, cheap assembly, and we sacked everyone in the customer support centre... Laughing

Sorry to say it mate, but in most boss amps, nothing is highly insulated from the outer case. If you have a decent short through the case, there is a very strong chance you've melted half a dozen capacitors.

Had one a while ago too.

Exact same thing.

You often wont see a fried capacitors or PNP diodes among the other hundreds of things in em that are weak and fuck up at the drop of a pin.
