Why do my diffs keep crapping themselves? Sat, 22 March 2003 12:22 Go to next message
It's not the gears breaking or anything (yet Evil or Very Mad), it's just the bearings at the front of the centre, the pinion bearings I guess.
Anyway, I've put in 2 second hand diffs in the last 5-6 months (with the car being off the road for 2 of those months) for the same symptoms, and now the third diff has gone the same way, it it seemed in really goon knick before I put it in.
Anyone know why this might be happening?

The oil level is fine, even a bit overfull when I checked it.
I'm using the same oil in my diff as my g'box, Castrol VMX80.
When I removed the fill plug there was a pressure build up in my diff, I know there's a vent of the top of the diff, what sort of problems could this being blocked cause?
I had my d'shaft shortened & balanced at the same time I installed the first second-hand diff, I guess I'll get the balancing rechecked if all else fails.

Thanks for any help.

Oh, and if anyone has a spare T292 celica diff for sale (4.1:1) please let me know. I gotta fix it by saturday!

EDIT: and I forgot to say, I'm not heaps rough on them either, I give it a launch now & then but don't crank burnouts or anything. It's only a little 4age after all. Smile
The current diff crapped itself on a 350km or so 100km/h trip, with some bumpy roads. Nothing too serious.
I was also on a speed unlimited section of road & travelled at around 130-150 for about a half hour or so.

I think this sort of thing can happen when the diff is out of alignment (ie twisted a bit) which puts a side loading on the pinion bearing and makes it crap out quickly. Also do you have any vibration in the drivetrain?

It doesn't vibrate much at all, but I'd have to take it out & have a good listen to give you a definite answer.
At high speeds, everything's pretty loud, but I'm pretty sure there's no excess vibration. Although the gearstick sure vibrates a bit, but it's a fairly slow wobble.

What would be the cause and fix of an out of aligned diff? There's not much adjustment to be made back is there? As in, none??

A badly aligned diff is usually the result of bent/damaged suspension components, assuming it's all factory; a poorly installed diff conversion is another story though.

Severely lowered suspension without an adjustable panhard rod can put the diff off-centre a bit, but I doubt that in itself would cause too many problems.

heya joel, when you install the new diffs that you get, do you tighten up the big nut on the front of the diff? if so then this will be throwing out you allignment and and eating itself away, so just when they are about to die, does the car start to go thud thud thud thud down the road???? I agree with Norbie, get the diff alignment checked. If it has trailing arms and that sort of thing, try and get some adjustable control arms which will allow for a squaring up of the diff.

Cheers

It's the standard diff, & isn't severely lowered, but I still have an adj. panhard rod.
When I put in new centres I never touch the big not on the front, I know not to touch this. My diffs never actually die either, they just become crippled. They just start whining really really loud, only under accel., and the whine increases with speed.
A centreless diff isn't much good to me, but thanks for the offer anyway.
I'm planning on having a couple things done to the suspension soon, so when I do I'll have someone look at the diff alignment. In the meantime I guess I gotta just keep chucking in new centres....

Well when you put a new diff in go for a heavier oil. vmx 80 is too thin andnot designed for high load situations like differentials. Personally i would go with lsx 90 as it is a real nice oil that can be used in both lsd's and stock diffs. or there is also a 85/140w oil that is more for racing diffs but will be good also.
There should be no need to touch the pinion nut as this only gets undone on a diff rebuild or to change the pinion seal. If you do it up too tight it will put too much preload on the pinion bearings and cause premature failure. I'd suggest instead of buying 2nd hand centres all the time save about $400 and get your diff rebuilt and set up correctly by a diff specialist... look in the yellow pages!

Happy hunting
Pete

how about finding a diff that hasnt done too many km ?
I know it is probably hard enough finding the diffs in the first place, but if you put in a diff that has done 150,000 to 200,000 km, how can you expect them to last for ever ?

They could have been in a car that was driven by some dickhead every day who dropped sets and did burnouts at every intersection. (oops, sounds like me in my supra....)

Maybe a run of bad luck saw you purchase diffs that had already seen their fair share of hard work. I have shattered 2 clutches, broken 2 diffs and smashed an axel in the past couple of cars I have owned. I know just what you are going through....

The last diff I put in was in very good nick, had been used very little since a rebuild (apparently, off course, but it looked & felt good) and all the diffs I've put in have been great at the start, then a month or two later start whining a bit. Then it gets worse & worse for another month until it gets real bad or I get sick of it & replace it.

I'll try a heavier oil with my next one, but I don't wanna be spending $400 bucks on a rebuilt diff if it's bearings are gonna fuck out too, I wanna find out what the cause is.
