Question about engines in general Sat, 29 March 2003 05:21 Go to next message
How many revolutions does a cranc do to complete one engine cycle
In a twin cam inline 4 cylinder engine.
Confused

From my understanding, Two. Only two cylinders are in each cycle though. So for all cylinders to have their go, 4. Goes for if it's a 6,8,10,12, or whatever as well. At any one time, half of the cylinders are intaking and compressing, and half are igniting and exhausting.

One crank turn for the intake/compression, then another one for the ignition/exhaust.

The amount of valves just dictates how much space opens for fuel/air and then exhaust.

On your 16v twincam, 4 per cylinder, two are intaking, and two exhausting.

If I'm way off, someone please let me know.

2
1(1 inlet stroke, 2 compression stroke)
2( 3 power stroke, 4 exhaust stroke).

Thanks I appriciate the knowledge, Just wanted someone to confirm it,
I know its one revolution for 1 piston if the piston is at the top, so theoreticly its 1/2 , 1 , 1/2 to complete the cycle. for two or four cylinders,
1/2 a revoloution is a intake and compression and 1/2 for explosion and exhust, so its 2 revolutions for a 2 or 4 cylinder,
That right hay
cheers Once again thanks for confirmation of two revoloutions

no, no, no.

what you are saying about 1/2 revolutions is wrong.

if you changed your word "revolution" to "cycle" it would be better.

If you think about it, any (piston) angine of any size, shape, configuration or number of cylinders will revolve twice to make one complete cycle.

lets break it down into strokes (half rotations) 2wo strokes per revolution, two recolutions per cycle. this equals 4 strokes per cycle (hence 4 stroke engine)

so,

one cycle for one cycle

two revolutions for one cycle

4 strokes for one cycle.

and this is the same for any number of cylinders.

O.K
I think I get it.
Two strokes for intake and compression and Two for explosion and exhust
So Its one revolution of a cranc for two strokes
and 2 revolutions for 1 cycle
so 4 strokes for a cycle or 2 cranc revoloution for cycle

Is that right
