you'd get an OK VP for that much, or a *VERY* nasty VR.

VP's are good. watch for rust in the boot, on the roof above rear screen and above front screen (they were a bit better than VN's) - um, slurring autos - watch for them - oil leaks from rear main, noisy timing chains (can be expensive - they rattle when revved) and stay away from dual fuel setups if they're not done properly...

otherwise the VP ain't too bad.

yeah that little 6 is a great engine...heaps of low down torque...whereas the vs had a better top end.

never liked the v6's in them - always found them to be harsh - and rough ... hell of a lot of internal vibration ..

Mind you - i shouldnt say much - i much prefer the EL straight six - Auto is a pig cause it kicks down early - but its no where near as rough when you boot it

( comparing to a VS berlina that ive driven BTW )

el trannys make that annoying whine...i couldnt drive one everyday, i also found the falcons change up too quick...u gotta use them in manual mode to rev them out, whereas the vs u can rev out to 6000 when using it in drive.

robbo, sounds like it needs a good service...(when was this last done)

i'd pull the plugs and bin em (i mean for $20, you can't go wrong anyway) check resistance of leads make sure they're OK, replace the airfilter (on special from holden at times for about 7 bucks) pull off the black plastic tubing to the TB, clean it out with carb cleaner/compressed air/rag.

try all this for a start!

if you STILL have it stalling on you, pull the throttle body off (i have a spare somewhere i can photo for ya to show how fucked up these things get and why it could be causing you issues) and clean the bloody thing out! will also be able to show you where the idle adjustment screw is which may help your cause too!

GEN 3's are aussie motors. The American LS1 is up to Generation 7 or 8 or something.

And I've got an old VC for sale it's fairly cheap, would go alright with a RB26. But has a new motor in it now.

My VN did the same thing. I tried the new plugs/leads... ended up needing a new coil pack(~$300).

---------------------------------------------

... ok I was wrong the new Corvettes have LS6 engines.
The aussie versions are still way behind the times though that's why they're pieces of shit.
The LS1's were used in 80's model chevs or earlier??

the gen 3's are actually canadian i think - they aint made here thats for sure - just bolted into the V series commodores .. the last v8 built by HOLDEN in oz was the 5 litre's found in the VT's and still by far they are the sweetest sounding v8 ive heard in a coomodore..

no holden motor bar the v6 - which is actually a damn buick brick is built in oz - as far as i know though i have suspicions of a 4 cyl motor from the vectra/astra being made ?

If you're looking for a C'dore to trailer your 'yota between race meets...

I noticed a Series 2 VT in the Melbourne Trading Post for around $3500. No engine/gearbox with an LSD... I think the crossmembers changed from the VS to the VT so you can't fit the VL crossmember(unsure of this though).
A VT with an RB26DETT would sure get some wierd looks though??

Stuart is right about the Gen111's not being built here. Holden is already going to the GEN1V for its next model as the GEN111's suffer from bad oil pressure loss problems which result in the engine needing to be replaced. They also can't be bored out much more than 5thou without problems.
I now have a black VS which i brought as a V6 auto after selling my TA22. I recently put in a 2000 vs111 maloo 185kw engine and getrag 5 speed. The Holden 5 litre is an awesome engine and with the amount of aftermarket performance parts available they can be easily modifyed to produce good power.
The VT 5L is the same engine as a 185kw except it has a roller cam and rockers bringing its peak power to 195kw. I wouldnt touch a GEN111 with a 40 foot pole!!
For around $4000 you should be able to get a nice V6 VP with around 100-150k kms. I brought my missus a VN berlina in january with full leather trim, all power options,17's lowered, sports exhaust, new 2pac respray and its 1 owner. Its 5L auto with corvette equipped tranny. I paid $7000 for it with 11 months rego. It is one of the cleanest VN's ive seen so that ought to give you an idea of what you will get for around $4000.

Jamie.
