Gearbox oil level Thu, 20 February 2003 22:23 Go to next message
Does anyone know how to check the level of the gearbox oil in a front wheel drive box?
Mine doesn't have a dipstick. Is this normal for toyotas?
The only way to see into the box is through the reverse light switch hole.
Shifting is a bit notchy, so I want to find out if low oil is the problem.

On all of the manual boxes I've played with the oil level is checked from the fill hole. The oil should be up to the level of the fill hole. I wouldn't bother with checking hte level though just drop the oil out and replace it with some nice new stuff, unless it's got new oil at the moment that is.

In my MR2 I was getting a lot of crunching when shifting to 2nd at anything over 5000rpm so I just replaced the oil with some basic penrite gearbox oil and now it shifts fine at any revs, much more pleasant to play with.

The only fill hole I can see is when I take the reverse switch out. Is this correct?
My owners manual says the gearbox should have 3L of oil, which isn't visible through the hole.

I've never looked at the gear box in a Caldina but generally on a front wheel drive box there will be a simple fill bung on the side of the box that you can remove and stick your finger in to check the oil level.

On the box in the MR2 which is a C52 there is a bung on the top(not too sure why this one's here), a fill bung on the side and a drain plug on the bottom. Like I said I'm not too sure about the Caldina, what box is it running?

I don't know what the code for my gearbox is, but the engine options in my car are 7A-FE, 3S-FE, 3S-GE, 2C-T.
Basically, Camry/Celica gear.
I know the drain hole is below the diff, I have a reverse switch on top of the box, is the fill hole on the back or front of the box?

Hey i jsut replaced my oil in the gear box.
Mine had all up about 2 1/2 litres. Nearly all the 4ages have about that amount.
You just undo the bolt on the front end. it's located about midway up. Keep filling until it won't take anymore. For my 20v that was about 2.5 litres
