sprinter engine question

in my 4ac sprinter, inside the air cleaner there is this little white thing that sticks up through the base and it has a bolt screwed down into it. it has a vacume line running to it. also a mate wants to know if removing his top cambelt cover will hav n e adverse affects on his engine.
i had my top cam cover removed on my old ae82 2ac its will be ok unless something makes its way in there which is unlikely but if you got the cover you may as well put it on if not i wouldnt be too worried.s anyway.
