Camry SV21/3SFE Ignition Problem

For the past year I have been having starting problems, from cold only when it's damp (which isn't all that often here at present - except for today that is, when I'm trying to fix it).
The engine will crank fine but the interesting thing is that it will give a couple of death throws only when the starter is disengaged, but it won't start.
Now this sometimes happens after sitting at the lights. When you go to move off it can cough, splutter and die! I can normally get it going again after a lot of cranking but it can be very embarrassing.
Well today it decided that it had had enough and refuses to roar into life.
I have changed the Air Map Sensor, checked all the wiring connections and renewed the distributer cap/HT leads ( this is the one with the molded cap/leads) to no avail.
Maybe there is someone who has experienced a similar fault that may be able to shed some light on it. Would be please if you could share it..
Thanks
BT

Sounds like a Fuel Problem to me.
Buy yourself a Gregorys manual and check it out, rather than replacing lots of parts.

i dont know if my problem is along the same lines but the car will NEVER start first time... but ALWAYS on the second...
someone here mentioned something about not enough fuel in the efi on startup, but once the engine has done a few turns it can suck enough in...

Try a diagnostic on the Engine management system and see what codes the computer throws up at you. If its a sensor that should be able to point you in the right direction

Thanks, guys for your thoughts and suggestions. Regarding the engine EFI codes, they showed clear and also Fuel pressure was not a problem. Interestingly Wizzfizz mentioned about the engine not starting 1st go. That usually happened with mine as well.
To cut a long story short, I couldn't wait any longer to get back on the road so I went to the Wreckers and picked up a new Distributer and that fixed it. So either the coil, hall effect unit or capacitor is suspect. Did a resistance check of all components and they were same on both distributors. Just been for a 700 Km trip to Tumut and back and alls well. Best $80 I've spent in a long time!!
Thanks again,
BT

Likewise, my mates camry won't start first go either, and regularly gets grumpy at idle, especially with the A/C on. Also wouldn't that dizzy use a reluctor rather than a hall effect switch?

Yes, it's just a coil pickup I/P to the computer. Bad choice of words on my part.
