DIFF IS SOLD SORRY

Pending the sale of the car it was intended for I will be selling the Diff I purchased for it.

Yes the Mythical Narrow Hilux Diff !

1370mm from rim Mounting Face to rim Mounting Face !
Complete with 10" drums and 4.875:1 Open Centre.

$350 Not Negotiable !

And before you rant about it being expensive thats what it cost me and when you price getting a diff shortened and a set of Axels Shorted/Made then its a lot cheaper than trying to shorten a 1415mm Hilux Diff !

Oh and I have it on good Authority that a RA23/RA28 diff is exactly 1370mm Mounting Face to mounting face Smile

(My TA22 is 1358 but has T-18 Drums !)

Can you get higher gearing for it?? Thinking of about a 4.1 - 3.7

Is it in good condition, or will it need a rebuild?

Anthony,

Diff is as I bought it mate and appears to be in good condition.
Ratios for the Hilux Diffs are available from 3.7 to 6.? but can be pricey for the 3.7 end of things.

You could probably just put it in as is (after Bracketing and restud of course) but I would recommend new wheelbearings and axle seals at a minimum.

Of course brakes (Handbrake cable at least) needs to be corrections.

Give me a buzz if you want.

Old School

I just bought an RA40 diff for my celica thinking that they were the same size, and there seems to be a few "experts" around that think the same. Take it from someone that has tried, an RA40 diff is wider than an RA2x diff.

This is good for you though, because a lot of the early Hilux models that came with a 1410mm wide diff, just about right for an RA40.

Rod

I am really strapped for cash at the moment, so I might have to pass this one up. Thats not saying that I don't need it though. I just changed my centre again on Sunday. Hopefully this one will last a while. I guess you have to expect the occasional lemon from a wrecking yard.

Old School,

The later Model Hilux Diffs are 1415mm Wide.... So is your RA40 Smile (Thats what I am reliably informed anyway, not measured myself. Perhaps you could confirm that with the RA40 diff you bought Anthony ? Please Make sure you use a Straight edge at each end to ensure an accurate measurement Smile )

Ohh and while we are on the topic of Experts and diffs that exchange. The TA22 Diff IS Narrower than the RA23/28 Diff.

Mounting points are in the same location but the TA22 Housing is narrower by 7mm. The RA23 has a 1232mm Housing, The TA22 has a 1225mm Housing. So if your happy with the stock size diff (ie T series) in your RA23/28 and your tires are scrubbing on the rear by a few mm. Now you have a bolt in fix Smile

No worries on the cash oinch Anthony I know exactly what you mean Sad

That would be great if you could measure it for me.. Smile

also I believe 4.875:1 is a better suited gear ratio for the Auto 1ggze seup i'll be running so If i can find a diff maybe we could swap centers or gears or what eva???

Old School,

To get the width of your Diff is pretty easy. You will need the help of a friend tho to ensure it is Accurate.

All you need to do is jack the back of your car up (A trolley Jack under the diff centre works best) and remove both the rear wheels.

The you need an acurate tape and two straight edges. A metal ruler is good or otherwise anything you know is straight.

Once the wheels are off you need to hold the straigh edges along the mounting face of your rear drums (The bit the rim presses up against) Then with the help of whoever is at the other wheel you can measurethe distance between the two straight edges without the drums or diff centre getting in the way. This way ensure the tape is nice and straight/accurate. Just make sure the straight edge is hard up againt the mounting face and not on an angle to it at all.

Let me know how you go and how wide you get Smile

Hope that Helps.

Man, if i had the cash id love to buy it off you, was this diff hard to come by when you say mythical?? Do you know which model/year hilux this came out of? or, better still does it have a model number anywhere on the diff to recognise it from different series'?

Are the drums 4 stud or 5?

Thanks,

Guy

Guy,

The Diff is out of the RN27 Hilux from the late 70's. They are proving incredibly difficult to find Sad I actually bought the whole Hilux to get this one ! Rolling Eyes

Rod,
Congrat's on selling this item. The going rate for one of these is $385 in Perth and there is only one left at the wrecker I called last week. The value of these things is well known now and they are often used in the back of old Mazda (R100, RX2, RX3)
rotary's.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Anyone know how hard it would be to put the MS112 Crown rear disc brakes on the G series diff?
