Brake upgrades (again...............) Tue, 25 February 2003 21:56 Go to next message
Has anyone got a tech document on ta22 brake upgrades. There seems to be a lot on the 23 upgrades but not a great deal on the 22. Can I make an assumption that they are the same (or very similar)...
If not the same has anyone got details of what they did and how it all turned out!
Thanks

Unfortunately the TA22 has completely different brakes, hubs and stub axles, so RA23 upgrades do not apply to the TA22. However, it's not hard to put RA23 struts in a TA22; there are probably others who can explain the details.

Sounds good! Thanks Norbie
Who out there can help me out with more info!!

And on a side note, are the diffs on a 22 replaceable with those of a ra23? Is there a way of identifying one from the other? I was given a box of parts and don't know whether they are for a 22 or ra23...
The reason for the question is I have a pretty loud diff whine going on, is there a way of reducing it or eliminating it all together? or do I need a new diff?!

thanks

The TA22 diff is different to the RA23 diff, it is a bit narrower and I think the centre is different also, but don't quite me on it.

I havn't had a close look at a 22 diff, so I am not sure what the difference is.

Depending on which noises it is making, you more than likely just have worn out wheel bearings. Not hard to fix but the bearings will cost about $80 a side.

RA23's have a T series diff centre, usually a T292. Later TA22's have a T series centre also so they are interchangeable, however some earlier TA22's have a D series centre.

OK...Well I know nothing about the spare diff - I don't even know whether or not it will be any better!! So how can I tell by just looking at it whether it is a T series or a D series???
Thanks again guys.

T Series is 10 bolt. Im not sure but I believe that D series is 8 bolt. You might check that. If its no help then you might measure crown wheel.

Thanks for that - I will check when I get home.....
now if they are the same (number of bolts) can I hook it straight up??!!!
how can I tell before I put it in if they will make the "whine" like the old ones did?? Or if they are any good at all!?

If you're not sure of the condition of the unit, take it to a diff shop. An inexperienced eye won't be able to pick a good diff from a bad one.

Basic checks: examine that there is no bearing play in drive shaft inner/outer(?) bearings and same to front/rear drive pinion bearing. Check play in final gear and pinnion play by spinning them.

This is just some basic stuff. For more accurate inspection go to diff shop.
