Replacing gaskets Wed, 26 February 2003 07:29 Go to next message
I'm currently pulling parts off my engine to detail before it goes into the engine bay, but I want to replace the gaskets while I'm at it.

1) I was just double checking, I SHOULD be using gasket goo with the gasket material to seal them all off right?

2) Also, someone told me to be careful with the order that you tighten the bolts on your intake manifold and make sure they are torqued to the right setting when putting it back on, is this correct?

Thanks,
Nathan

A bit of Gasket sealant is not going to hurt the situation at all, I'd use some, just not too much like some people who think it can be a 'replacement' for the gasket itself.

The order should simply be a criss cross fashion, like what you should use when you change a wheel. The reason for this is to make sure that the manifold is flush or square with the mating surface.

Hope this helps

Nathan, yes, bolts should be done up to their correct torque setting... Otherwise, they aren't too hard to break...

I've done it so many times...

Torque settings can usually be told by markings on the top of the bolts if they are still the original bolts...

And, most bolts for heads, manifolds, rocker covers should always be tightened in correct order... The orders are usually stated in workshop manuals for that specific engine...

Yeah, I work at Toyota... I can look for you but I'm not too sure if it'll be there...

I'll let you know how I go...
