Bellhousing - 5 speed to 12R motor Thu, 27 February 2003 06:32 Go to next message
Hi guys.

I'm rebuilding a 1969 Corona, and I believe there is a bellhousing available which will allow a 5 speed box to be bolted to the 12R motors (I'm putting a fully re-built 4R into the Corona, which is basically a high performance version of the 12R). I understand that some of the later RT81's (ie the model after the RT40's, and which had 12R engines) had 5 speed boxes.

I have a 1979 RA40 Celica which I have taken off the road, and would like to fit the 5 speed out of that into the Corona (the Celica has the 18R-C motor). I'm not sure if that box would be the same as those fitted to the RT81 Corona's, and if I can get a ready-made bell housing, that would make the job a lot easier. Can anyone help. ??

Thanks.

Barry

Barry, the RT81 ran a 4 speed (never a 5 speed). However the 4 speed was a W40. You can use that bellhousing to mate the 12R (or 4R) to your W50 (Celica 5 speed). I don't know where a spare one is unfortunately, but will keep my eyes peeled.

Thanks, gianttomato. If you can get onto a bell-housng some time in the future, would be much appreciated.

I think that I have an R series to W50 bellhousing in the garage.

I'll check this afternoon and confirm, if it's still there it's free to a good home, located in Sydney, cartage, your problem.

There are marked differences in the bellhousing between 18R to W40/50 box and 12R to W40 box.
The R, 2R, 3R, 4R, early 5R, and 12R all have a cowling/shroud that surrounds the flywheel, making the bellhousing much shorter. The 18R doesn't have this shroud so the bellhousing is longer.
Cheers.

hi, big fella. Yeah, I know what you mean about the large shroud on the back of the 4R. Hopefully suthol's bellhousing might do the trick , if he can find it - oh, I hope he does. (how do you get those smiley thingo's to appear)

I have the bell housing, it is 18RG to W50 ( steel case Celica ) it has the clutch cylinder but no fork or throw out bearing.

I have some stuff going to Brisbane next week and can throw it in, won't make much difference to the load weight.

PM with some details, I won't be checking online again until tomorrow some.

Hi, suthol. I'm not sure if the 18RG bellhousing is going to be any good to me, unfortunately. I'm really after one which will allow me to bolt up the 12R motor Sad . (I can probably pick up a 18RG bellhousing here in Townsville).

No worries, I was not aware of the difference, it's up in the roof of the garage if any one wants it, I'll give it a week or so and then recycle.

Correct me if im wrong but arnt the 18r and the 18r-g the same block which would make it the same bellhousing.

Hi, Jason - they probably are, mate. But I need a bell housing with a 12R bolt pattern on the front of it, and a Celica 5 speed(as in 18R-C) on the back. I understood that either the RT81 or RT82 Corona's (ie about late '70 to '72 or therabouts) had a 5 speed as an option, as well as some of the early Hi-Lux utes ( ie those fitted with 12R's). But gianttomatoe tells me that RT81's were all 4 speeds.

OK, Dave, thanks for your help, mate - much appreciated. There is a wrecker up the road a bit who may have some RT81's - will give him a ring tomorrow and see if he has any of the 4speed to W40 bellhousings per gianttomato's suggestion.
