How exactly does a turbocharger work?

Hey guys, i thought that if i was gonna do the 3SGTE operation, i should know how it all works. I know how a regular engine works but i have no idea what exactly the turbo does. can anyone help me? Also, what do wastegates and BOV's have to do with it? do they increase power or are they just for wankers with shilvias?

My girlfriend bought me the How Stuff Works book for Valentines day. I love her to bits 
The book is a great read (better than staring at the screen).
