ok dudes... i need some help becuase im stupid and my bloody 18R-GU wont start...
I've also got myself a spare 18R-GU to play with, and have basically copied the wiring of the ignition straight from that. HOWEVER, the two have slightly different dizzys (from the outside anyway). The one in the car that wont start only has the black wire frim the ignition coil connected to that little bolt at the back... and nothing else connected to that. Is this ok?
The OTHER motor has the below setup. It has that same black wire from the dizzy bolt to the igntion coil, but also has a wiring going to this small cylinder on the dizzy too. Im totally confused.
is there anyway to see if the car is sparking with a mere multimeter?
the dizzy:

That small cylinder on the dizzy is pretty important, its called a condensor & is nothing more than a capacitor. You're dizzy really needs this, but it's cheap & easy to replace. Replace the points while you're at it.

Thats regular dizzy with breaker points. Just like other one that you got. Capacitor (cylinder) is there to prevent sparking between the points and your car will run just fine without it though points will wear out quickly. You can check operationing of the points by connecting bulb (12v) between coil and dizzy (into that black wire) and then crank your engine by some wrench. Light should go on and off. You can also use ohm meter instead of bulb. Your rotor is in right position, right? Check spark if there is one I would be almost 100% sure that your dizzy is 180degrees wrong.

M.V.P., you were quicker than I . I did struggle with ingnition last summer and I have to drove something like 2 days without capacitor. No probs nor that it didnt work great due to jaded coil(hard to get running and lazy becouse of faint spark). Sparking between points was bad enough to give me a reason to replace points. Radio worked just fine BTW.

wow... its amazing what you can learn by reading books and forums
ok, that dizzy pictured is from an 18R-G that was WORKING just fine previously.. however i have now replaced that into my other 18R-G in the car that wont start, following (roughly) the installation guide given by the 18R engine workbook.
I have since narrowed the problem down to possibly fueling... since there is sparks, but no life in the motor.
Thanks for the help guys... should be going tonight, i hope

Have you checked that your dizzy is right way? I mean that it isnt 180degrees wrong way and still in correct position. If it is then your spark is fired in the end of the exhaust cycle. Check this out first before go digging problems that arent there.
Its easy to check fuel probs by puoring some gas into carburettors throat but since you have sidedrought (wrong spelled I know) it would be bit more tricky than case of downdrought(again I know ).

dizzy IS NOT 180 degrees out - i checked that both valves on cylinder 1 were UP when i installed the dizzy according to the 18R-G book (the green book) that i have.
Still not working. I got it backfiring tho!
Will be trying to use the stock solec's in the next day or two instead of the webers. Damn i loved those webers too

Ok, so cyl 1 is at TDC with both valves closed.
Dizzy rotor is pointing at the cyl 1 plug wire.
If thats correct, then your right, it should be running.
Next is to get a timing light, and while cranking, check your ign adv is correct.
Look down your carb, give the accel pedal a few squirts, you should see petrol being squirted in by the accel pump... if it is, then your carb should be ok.
