My old man has a VP commodore and it doesn't do that.
It clunks and jerks through the gears like all true australian cars but it doesn't stall when putting into park.

hi robbo
that indeed sounds like an issue - does it actually shut the car off completely ie: do all the dash lights go out or does the car stall? sometimes when a VN/VP is put into neutral/park they stall as the IAC's get sticky in the throttle bodies and cause this.
let me know how you get on. can help

Sounds electrical.
Commodores are known for having very poor alternators. Perhaps you can mearsure the output from the alternator at different Revs with a multimeter and determine if that is the cause

IAC = idle air control, what it does is compensate for load on the engine like when the AC is on, when you activate the power steering by turning, basically the computer senses no load on the engine, and "thinks" that the engine is being loaded up so compensates for it thats all.
alternators are ok on commodores actually. the regulators die on them quite often, up, at 750rpm in neutral you should see ~14.1v charging.
202km....my suggestion would be to pull the throttle body off and get out the carby cleaner and give the plastic plenum and all the throttle body a good clean up...
failing that, there is a screw on the throttle body (idle stop screw) which you can adjust to bring up the idle a wee bit - its a bastard to get to tho (you need a precision screwdriver (small) to get to it.
other things to look for at that age, make sure the auto shifts to reverse quickly, that it doesn't slip or slur gears (the kickdown cables are adjustable and a PITA) check for rear main leaks - the VP's are better as they have the neoprene seal not the fucking shit rope type like the series 1 and series 1.5 VN's....about all that comes to mind, hope this helps
hope this helps.
