Hey all!
I am looking to buy myself a sexy twinky, and I have a few questions I would appreciate being answered by any of you fine folk.
1. What are the common problems/faults with the car.
- I know about rust in the rear quaters.
2. Being an old car I realize that there will be certain wear and tear that will need fixing. Any suggestions, and how much these may cost?
3. Being 6"1' and a bit of a fat ass, how comfortable will one of these cars actually be? Will I be able to sit without my knees being under my chin?
4. What kind of fuel ecconmy can I expect frm the older engine?
( at the moment I am getting about 12 /100K from my sick 4AC, but I am using abot that in Oil too.
In advance,
Thank you all very much for your time
-Shaun.

Just minor rust thats easy to fix.
2. Being an old car I realize that there will be certain wear and tear that will need fixing. Any suggestions, and how much these may cost?
Check the chassis for ridgidy (spelling)
suspension front and rear if it hasnt been replace it would be soft and soggy ewwwww
Aircon see if its still got gas
3. Being 6"1' and a bit of a fat ass, how comfortable will one of these cars actually be? Will I be able to sit without my knees being under my chin?
Hmm you'll fit but depending on the steering wheel.. the chair can move back abit but youd squash the rear passenger =p
4. What kind of fuel ecconmy can I expect frm the older engine?

hmmmm about 450-550kms pulp for full tank
depending on the conditon of the engine, its tuning and all

Thank you all very much for your time

Also when you do a test drive.. see how the owner drives it. if he trashes the crap out of it every gear etc. and if he doesnt ask him to bring the revs up alittle higher to see if anything goes wrong top end.

Don't expect the fuel gauge to be truthfull in any way shape or form and be weary of other dash instruments too.

* CV's
* Wheel Bearings
* Gearbox Synchro's
* Rust rear Quarters
* Water in rear tail lights (leads to bad connections and rusty sockets)
You will fit comfortably, but not with a passenger behind you...
Cheers

Yeah, when I was looking for RA65 Celica one particular owner drove it before I did and they thrashed it. The owner was someone I knew from Uni so they said a deposit was put on the car before I bought it, to save me from buying his car, which I was told, had its share of problems.
I know this is (a bit) off topic of AE82s, but it is applicable when buying any used car.

Cv's - when driving the car, turn the wheel to full lock in both directions and listen, you will hear a clicking sound. Check the CV boots for tears.
Wheel bearings (esp passenger side front) jack up car and spin wheels listening. If you hear a greating noise or there is play in wheel, ther is most likely a problem with the Wheel bearing or tie rods.
Another indicator on wheel bearing wear is take the mag centre cap or hup cap off and have a look at the hub. If you have any signs of a red dust/powder, the wheel bearings are ont he way out..
