icon5.gif  What engine for RA65 Sun, 02 March 2003 11:42 Go to next message
I've just bought myself an RA65 celica and the engine in it is stuffed.
My budget is about $1750 and I would prefer something Naturally aspirated.
I have been looking at the 4A-GE 20valve. It puts out around 160hp and is fairly cheap.
Other people have suggested that I get a 1G-GTE. I would prefer the 1G-GE but it has less power than the 4A-GE so it kind of defeats the purpose of getting the engine.
So what should I get guys?

20v would not have the torque to lug around an RA65. I'd seriously be considering a 1GGTE, but if you don't want a turbo, the 1GGE is a nice engine...just listen to this:

the last generation of 1G-GE has around 160HP

it might not break concrete like the GTE's but it will still turn the RA65 into a fun car.

ill have to record the sound of my car again i think, in the sound above u can hear the bloody loud lift pump at the start and my axle bearings making noise at the end Rolling Eyes

It all comes down to torque. I would not put a 4A into an RA65 'coz the car would be a slug.

With your budget, none of the engines mentioned would be possible anyway.

Why not try to track down an 18R-G or 3T-GTE? They're not as new, but are within your budget.

If you decide to go a 1gge i know someone with one for sale. In melbourne (didn't look where your from)

The 4age is a no no (as per slug comments)

the 1gge or 1ggte and i think the 1ggze would be great(super torque)

a 18rg is reather torquie but older (cheap and easy tho)

the RA65 is rather heavy so with out some large torque and power its never going to be a rocket (with NA engines listed)

still fun tho

The 1G-GE actually looks like a better option for me.
160hp which is no slouch and it could pull a few more with a decent exhaust system.
The reason I do not want turbo is because I would need an intercooler and the insurance would go up a fair bit as well.

I've narrowed it down to a few engines, out of these which should I get and why?
7M-GEU
1JZ-GE
1G-GE
3S-GE

I've upped the budget to around $2000 now and mainly after power so long as the engine doesn't weigh too much more than the 22R does.

7M and 1JZ

are too much trouble to fit on a budget (i should say too much trouble to fit period)

the 3S while a great engine is also too much trouble to fit on a budget

the 1G is the easiest of them all to put in.

i bought my front cut for $950 and made over $500 back selling parts off it. if u are handy then u can save money on exhaust and wiring by doing as much as you can yourself, the more you do yourself the more money you will save.

you have a pretty good platform for the 1G, u have the EFI fuel tank and pump already, you also have pretty good brakes (my engineer passed my stock RA40 brakes)

HTH

EDIT: look around http://www.toymods.org.au in the articles section and in the gallery/tech docs there is a HEAP of info there.

You can count the 7M and 1JZ out 'coz they'll kill your handling.

Off the top of my head...
1G swap is minimum $4k.
3S swap is minimum $8k.

Well past your budget.

As I said, it you're serious about an engine swap with the given money, go for the 18R-G (or 18R-GEU if you want to keep your EFI). They make as much power as the 1G-GE and are bulletproof preformers.
Only problem is that they're getting a bit old.

Yup, 18R-GEU is the only sensible option given the budget. This engine was also available from the factory in your chassis (specifically, the JDM-spec RA63), so it will be a walk in the park (relatively speaking) to install. I managed to put one of these into an RA23 in an afternoon without any special tools or equipment apart from a hired engine crane; I think that pretty much sums it up! Smile

18rg would be the go unless you want to go for another 22re i have a drag cam and a few "go fast" bits here o/s valves and shit, i would have estimated my 22re at about 170-180hp and that is only just achievable with your budget

to get a half decent motor you are going to be looking at least $1000 and then you have to get some prick to install it if you cant do it yourself, add it all up and its going to be very tight

1GGTE seems to be the best option for me.
It's a vast increase over the 105hp of the 22r.

I still have the 22R with the distributor and everything so roughly how much would it cost me to put one of these into my car?

What about a 1G-GZE?

I've found a front cut for $1500.
So what other costs would be included if I were to put this into the car?
Would it still be way out of my limit or is it within grasp?

Let me rephrase that question.

If I can get a half cut 1g-gte or 1g-ge would that dramaticly reduce the overall cost?
Or would I still have to fork out a lot of dosh? Confused

Re: What engine for RA65 Mon, 03 March 2003 12:14 Go to previous messageGo to next message
for two grand, you could probably replace the engine with another engine that is exactly the same as the one that came out,
that's about it (this is just my moderately educated opinion)

i would budget about 1000 bucks just for the conversion, at the least (for a 1ggte or a 1gge) as i don't think it will be a bolt in swap.

save your money more, you can always spend what is left over on mods (or essentials like food and beer)

Unless you are totally in love with the shape of the car, sell it and buy something else, like a supra of the same vintage.

I've only just bought the thing and it's my first car.
The current 22r isn't working so I was going to replace it with something a little bit more powerful.
But it looks like that will have to be put on hold untill I can get a secure income to fund my wild ideas Twisted Evil
I have access to a potential $4500 but I don't just want to fix up the engine, there are other aspects of the car that need attention as well.
Looks like I'll either have to fix up the current engine or drop in the 18R-GEU.

Has anybody got some statistics for this particular engine?

dont go just a small step up to a 1gge...cos down the track ull regret it...it wont have enough power to satisfy you. Buy something more powerful...1ggte, jz series or 7m or something and get the power now then u wont regret spending money and having nothing to show for it.

acess to 4500 dollars? this will get you a rough 80s supra, sell your car and you can get one a bit nicer, either that or sell it and buy a cheap car that runs (a good idea for a first car), then get something else to work on so you can still drive around while you save up for various bits. don't waste your money on a car that has a blown engine and needs attention in "other areas"
