Starting a 1G without gearbox and bellhousing

Hey everyone,
My 1GGTE is sitting there with no clutch or gearbox/bellhousing, just its flywheel. The starter motor (which I don't have at the moment) goes into the side of the bellhousing, and looks like it may be attached to it.
What I'm wondering is if anyone has had this experience and knows if I can attach the starter and just fire it up the way it is? I just wanted to drop it in as soon as the paint is finished to not drag out the start of my warranty too long.
Does anyone with experience in 1G's know if this can be done?

wrap a piece of rope around the crank pulley a few times, turn the ignition to on, and give the rope a *big pull*
make sure you wrap the rope the right way around though, otherwise you could start the engine backwards.
lol!

I think I might be able to bolt it just to the engine, I'm going to have a really good look this arvo because the flywheel is still there, trouble is, I dont have a starter motor to see
Basically, the reason for me doing this is I cant afford to pay for the clutch, the VR4 Intercooler and paint at the same time, but on the other hand, I don't want to keep Japanese Motorsport waiting too long before I start my warranty.
So the plan is to just try and drop in the engine itself which will make much less hassles, start it up, then take it out, get the clutch sorted and drop the whole thing in at my own pace...
btw..you at uni at the moment?

yep, at hospital (uni) - big fuckin body ache from a *large* weekend, cant be bothered doing anything. so just surfing the day away... cardiothoracic surgeons are cocksmokers, thats all ill say about that!
as for japanese motorsport - dude, theyve got your money, im sure thaeyre not stressing about holding your afm and ecu for a while. they obviously expect a decent delay between most people getting their engines and the actual installation, so i wouldnt let that idea rush your conversion.

Haha, I'm keen to get it started as well though dude As long as the problem of firing it up can be sorted out, I'd like to fiddle with the wiring towards the start of semester when I have more time

Dewd, do the conversion first and then start it up...
Some problems will only show up with engine load.... No rush, and you don't lose anything in starting it when it's all done...

True that. The biggest expense for me at the moment is going to be the clutch...once thats done, most of the other stuff is cheaper, because I've already set aside the money for the IC and the piping...

Hahaha!
Also at work tonight. My classic cardiothoracic surgeon quote for the day so far ....." 6 micrograms/minute of noradrenaline is a really big dose......" I missed the rest as my eyes glazed over. Tell that to the guy in the next bed on 100 mcg/min.
/end rant.
Yeah, you can start it without a box - just need to bolt the starter motor to the block securely. But I'm with Nark.

I got a quote this arvo. The dude tested the stock clutch, its just under 2000lb pressure plate.
He's going to uprate the pressure plate 30%, replace the stock Aisin friction plate with a Daikin one as "it has a better centre", replace the thrust bearing, machine the flywheel and generally tidy up the surfaces of the clutch itself. It will be approximately $380 plus GST, so about $420 all up.
