87 soarer questions

My girl and I took an '87 1g-gte imported soarer for a test drive the other day. I found it really sluggish, it was auto, but really sluggish. Like my commodore wasn't sluggish, so i an thinking the gear box/or toqrue converter leaves a lot to be desired??? does anyone else find this, and can the gearbox in the soarer be replaced with a commo box??? I would look at replacing it with manual, but then i would have to find clutches and everything.. well I haven't actually bought the car anyway, so i guess i might try to find an manual one to compare...
This one is at the car yard on nind street for anyone who is on the Gold Coast. really nice car, if i had the $9000 cash i would probably get it (well i would try to get them down to about 8.5, esp if it is cash...)

If you want a car with a manual transmission, buy a car with a manual transmission... it doesn't make sense to buy an auto and convert it straight away. And no, a Commodore box won't fit in a Toyota... of course it won't!
As for the sluggishness, it's a big heavy car with a 2 litre engine... that's just how they are.

Keep an eye out and find a 3.ltr turbo. HEAPS more torque and have better power for the car.
You can pick them up for that price you are talkin about. There are HEAPS more up there !!
ohh and they are commo beaters !  munch munch 5 litre for lunch !

Im just about to fit a 1G-GTE in my car at the moment, its a MZ11 Soarer (1981) which is currently fitted with a 5MGEU. I think these motors are nearing the 160kW's mark power wise.. with a custom exhaust manifold and new T3 turbo, truck size intercooler (600x400x60) and boost controller, im sure it would pull the MZ11's weight easy enough.. What are the 1G-GTE's like stock in the Soarer MZ11's, anyone?
