strange noise in 20valve :(

Hey all I have been getting a strange noise from my 20v 4age that I can't explain. The car is a 94 ae101 trueno that is stock as and has had no mods done yet.
Its just a small sound like a slipping sound, kinda of short squeel kinda spinning noise. And its only there for half a second as the eninge hits 2500rpm, it goes away after that and isnt there before that. If i hold the speed at 2500rpm then it does keep making it which is strange. Its not that loud, I cant hear it wen i have the stereo turned up to the average volume but i can hear it if i have it off or low and Im sure passerbys can her it as im driving past and must be thinking to them selves wtf is up with that car.
Could it be one of the vee belts??? I would think if it was it would keep making the noise as the engine speed increased and not just at 2500rpm. Also how often should I replace the vee belts as I may think about doing it soo nanyway even if it's not them causing the sound
Im confident its not the ac belt cos i have tried with air con and fan on/off combos and its still there throughout.
I have a funny feeling it may be something to do with the clutch or gear box, could it be the clutch slipping??? About a month agao I had a small gearbox leak fixed and had the gearbox oil topped up and it was making the noise before that but now since doing that it has quietened down a bit, also it has had the oil changed so it could be any of these two thinkgs that quietened it a bit.
Does that belt spray stuff work that you can buy to renew old belts to stop em from slipping?
Someone must have some idea what it could be, please help out im desperate and its really annoying.
thanks in advance for anyhelp.

If it's only there for a moment as you pass 2500, it's unlikely to be the clutch - can you get it to make noises free revving it? Turn on everything electrical e.g. lights, and yank the steering wheel around while free revving it, to load up the belt, see if that makes it slip.
Changing the belts isn't too hard, I've only done an AE101 levin, but I would presume the trueno is very much the same. Has it got superstrut suspension? Jack it up, take off the wheel, then remove the plastic inner guard liner, and you'll need skinny arms and a long socket entension, along with a bit of bad language
Steer clear of that belt grip crap, it makes a filthy mess of everything!

Thanks for that it doesnt make the sound while in neutral and free reving, I will go out tonight and give it a go without any electrical stuff on. Will also try reving it to 2500 in 1st gear with the clutch engaged to see if it does it then (though only for a second so i dont burn the clutch).
What do you mean exactly by yanking the steering wheel around... to load up the belt? Can you explain further please as I'm pretty new to cars and engines. Also it doesnt have superstrut so I't can't be that.
Cheers you have been the most help out of all the people I have talked to so far.

OK I have just been out for a drive turned off fan, air con and turned radio down to zero (it don't have a power button so i just turned it down to zero).
What I think I forgot to say In my first post is it doesnt make this sound when the engine is cold and only after the engine starts warming up, so like 5 mins into a drive or so depending on how cold it is. But it is always there after the engine has warmed up even when I am driving really gently like a granny.
Ok so back to what I was saying, I drove it for about 10 mins until it started making the sound, pulled off down a side road and parked. While idling in neutral I reved the engine to 2500rpm a few times with out experiencing the sound, did the same again with ac on and still nothing. Turned off ac and put it in first and with the clutch in reved it quickly to 2500rpm a couple of times then repeated with ac on.... no noise. Let the engine idle for a while then took off at granny pace slowly bring it up to 2500rpm in first gear and wam there it goes, into second then at 2500rpm it did it again, then again in third gear at 2500rpm. Turned down another side road droping down into second then was bringing it up to 2500rpm and at about 2250rpm
pushed the clutch in 100% and the engine reved past 2500rpm with out any noise.
So Basically I have a noise that is there when its in gear and being driven. So I have come to the conclusion that it is either the gearbox or a belt that is only slipping when the car is in gear and the revs are hitting 2500rpm.
Any help is appreciated in resoving this matter, its a really annoying thing that is happening... so annoying its making me dread driving my car around for a cruise as the thing that annoys me most is cars cruising past in town or something that are making strange noises... now it's my car making the strange moise.

Have you considered the brakes at all?
Mabey a shim plate or somthing.... are the brakes dusty? Are your wheels properly ballanced?
Try lightly resting you foot on the brake pedal while accelerating through 2500rpm and see what happens....
Just a few other ideas to eliminate mabey, although if it only happens when warm, it does sound more like gearbox. As the engine revs past 2500rpm with the clutch pedal all the way in, you can fairly well eliminate all the belts or a dodgey alternator.
Good luck!
Craig.

Yeah I've got a gut feeling that it's the gear box as it was a lot louder before I had a gearbox leak fixed. After I got that fixed they topped up the gearbox oil and it was much more quiet, but alas its still there.
The question I want to know is what could it actually be wrong with the gear box? Like are syncros buggered or the actual gears buggered or something else? It's some times a bit rough when changing gears, especially if im accelerating fast. I think I will get the gearbox oil drained and replaced to see if that helps. I guess I'm dreading taking it in to the mechanics because it's probally gona be my luck thats its something big and expensive.

OK I'm back to the idea that it may still be the vee belts. Tried reving while in gear with the clutch in and I'm 90% sure it was making the noise this time... only it was a slightly different tone. How much would it cost to get the vee belts replaced?

The price of the belts (mabey $10 to $15 each) and about half an hours work. Simple to do yourself.
