7MGTE oil cooler hose size?

I'm after the exact hose size for the hose that goes on the return to the sump and the supply from the block for the factory oil cooler on the 7mgte.
Is it 5/8th of an inch?
Hooking up a new oil cooler to keep the girl cool and increase its life with the new setup.

paul, unlucky mate, my old lines went in the trash on sun night... do'h!
i can tell you the ID is ~9.5mm though
i would (at a guess) say the OD is at least 5/8th (its not 1/2"). but i dont spose that is worth much to ya!
cheers

Its actually 3/8th guys! Suprising, seems a little small for an engine oil cooler.

3/8" ??? wtf?!
serious?
whats the ID on a 3/8" line?
i gotta say, the oil cooler lines i threw out on sun (1986.5 7mge supra) were a lot bigger than 3/8!!
oh well, if it fits!
good work
cheers

Yeah thats exactly what I thought to ed.
I saw rays factory oil cooler and saw the lines going to it and the diameter of the actual cooler pipes with the fins on it and it definitly appeared to be bigger than 3/8ths. I thought at least half inch looking at it.
But when i put this 3/8th oil cooler hose over the sump return it fitted nice and tight, and also for the supply to the cooler from behind the oil filter.
I tested the cooler, it get to like 45-50c after drving for an hour, doesn't feel like its flowing properly cause it should be closer to 85c as the coolant temp is.
Its not flowing properly but I tested it with just water and it flowed very well, considering oil is thicker it should still flow well and get quite hot but its not.
Anyone know if there is an oil thermostat in the block or oil cooler adaptor to open up at hot oil temps?

did you just use that outlet fitting that bolts to the block underneath the oil filter assembly?? you just use the standard fitting?
if so, its set up as a pressure bypass only type cooler. not a hell of a lot of oil really goes down there, and it only does bypass through the cooler at higher oil pressures. so the pipes are prolly ok, but the fitting is a delibertae regulator of the flow.
im not sure how hot a normal 7mgte oil cooler gets. maybe with the turbo bleeding off some oil pressure (compared to a 7mge) the bypass going through the cooler doesnt see as much flow (again, compared to a 7mge)...
i dunno.
maybe you could find another way of hoking up the cooler (ie a pressurised cooler). not sure how youd do this though, never looked too hard at a 7m to do it.
cheers

Yes i'm just using the standard fitting that fits between the block and the oil filter.
So it has a high pressure bleed off, hmmmm interesting.
That would explain my lack of flow through the cooler, ill have to remove the spring and let it flow freely. But then perhaps the oil will get too cold.
I'm running GTX3 now instead of fully synthetic mobile1 as i wasn't getting enough oil pressure with the synthetic.
I only had 6psi at idle now about 11psi with GTX3.

ahhh no no no,
sorry, i didnt mean that alloy piece between the oil filter and block. there is another way of mounting oil coolers to the 7m block: 'down' ie 'lower' on the block beneath the oil filter, theres a diamond shaped blanking plate on the block - thats where the 7mge oil coolers run out from. The fitting that goes to THIS outlet is presure regulated.
i have no idea if the 7mgte sandwich plate type oil filter fitting has a pressure regulator in it (never really looked), but i suspect it would - a) because the oil cooler used isnt a pressurised type, and b) it still sources oil from 'before' the filter, at a high pressure part of the system, and runs it back to the sump. if you had no regulator with this setup, the engine would never see oil at low rpm.
so, in summary, i dunno.. but id be suspecting that there is a bypass regulator in there
cheers

Just did a search looking for info and I thought Id start this thread going again.
this is going to sound pretty stupid but where does the oil from the cooler re-enter the engine?

On the older M series engines it drains back to the sump. There is a banjo type fitting located high up on the sump. I can't remember exactly on the 7Ms. These 2 boys will be much more specific.
