Problem's with my brakes... arrghh! Thu, 13 June 2002 22:45 Go to next message

guys,

My brakes are playin funny buggers on me, what happens as im driving along it all seems ok and then when i brake a few times, prob after around 10 mins of driving they start to get jammed, and each time i use em they get stuck harder, making accelerating etc harder. Also when this happens the brake pedal goes from normal to really hard, like extremely hard, only moving a couple of mm. i have recently put new rubber's etc in the master Cyl. was just thinking that maybe the springs are worn out and not returning enough because of the newer tighter rubbers. i have also had the calipers apart and reco'd but stil happens?

oh, it's on my ae86

any ideas?

cheers

If you have drums on the rear, check them out. I had a similar problem with my SA63 Celica. What was happening is, when you depress your foot on the brake, it also uses the rear brakes, and when the drums need machining and the shoes need replacing, they grab and don't let go.

Possible, just a suggestion! Smile

it seems to be coming from the front as when it happens and i pull over, i get smoke coming from the front and you can smell the brakes... also when it happens if i losen the bleed valve at the front then brake fluid spirts out and then the pedal is softer again for a while,

cheers

sounds to me like a problem with your master cylinder... your sugegstion of the return spring is probably not too far wrong... did you build the master cylinder yourself? if so then pull it off again (not hard) and take it to a brake place to have it checked out... even if it means paying for another rebuild, better than your life... never skimp when it comes to brakes!!!

i ahve uni exams too... what a shit!!! i hate studying, i'd much rather be out playing with my car...

back to the brakes... did you rebuild the cylinder??? did you put a kit through it? did the kit include a new piston???... i ask cos a new piston that is not an exact match to your old one can cause problems like you describe... it has to do with the depth of the recess at the back of the pistont hat the rod from the booster pushes against...

na, i just got a new rubber kit, not the whole kit as it was like 180 bux from toyota ex japan and a 3 week wait after you ordered it. thats why i think it's prob the springs in the master cylinder and the new rubbers would be a little tighter than the old worn ones... maybe i should have spent the money and waited...

all i can suggest is getting your master cylinder looked at... if you get hold of a second hand one fromt he wreckers for a few bucks, try it and see if that is actually the problem... t hat way you can take the next step which would be getting the master cylinder looked at... another thing, did you put rubber greece on the rubbers when you assembled the master cylinder? i'm not sure if this makes any difference when there is brake fluid in the bore, just a thought...
