1UZ and RA28 possibile? Wed, 15 May 2002 04:01 Go to next message
hey
i've long being considering a RA28 celica as a project car, obviously the 96hp 20R isnt gonna cut the performance mark i'm after. so what would be the easiest N/A bang for buck engine to fit?

18R-G seems to get up to around 130hp with bit of work
4AGE looks alrite for about 140-150hp with bit of work
7M-GE will give 180hp without mods (about what i'm after)
1UZ sits on a nice 240-260hp without mods (would be damn nice!)

which of these contenders would be the easiest to put in (18R-G is a bolt in i hear) and what major issues would stand in the way of each one? are the mounts close? easy to modify if need be? trasmission compatibility?

i'd perfer to get the 7M or 1UZ however the 1AGE will do i suppose Very Happy

cheers.

18RG will just bolt in....will share same engine mounts and bellhousing, and I think you'll find it will provide a bit more power than the 130hp you quoted when worked. They are getting very tired now as they are quite old.

The other options would all require a variable degree of custom work to fit.
4AGE would also be easy but it may not have quite enough torque.

I personally wouldn't bother with an M series in a Celica - too long and far too heavy.

1UZ is a good option, and has been done. It would however require some serious work to make it happen.

I think you haven't considered the best option, a 1G of some description. I couldn't think of a better power up than a small light multivalve 6 cylinder.

As the big red dude said:

4A-GE: Not enough torque

7M-GE: Waaaay too heavy

Go the 1G-GTE!

210hp from a virtual drop in conversion. Bang for the buck in an RA Celica, you can't beat a 1G.

nark SquarkyD asked for N/A alternatives..

SquarkyD it is interesting to hear that u have a 20R in your RA28, do u know the history of your RA28? as we didnt get the 20R engine in australia, could it be an RA29? or did it have a previous engine transplant?

my opinion is the 1G-GE, or RS200 3S-GE, or 1UZ-FE it all depends how much you are willing to spend and how much u want to stuff around fitting it...

I second all the above points, but if you are looking for bang for buck, id say go turbo, but if you have your heart set on n/a
you should seriously consider the 1g or 3s, in my opinion the 1uz would be a pain the arse conversion. I considered doing this conversion to my ra23, but the cost and headache was enough to make me go out and buy a 1g-gte and put a fat arse turbo on it for a higher power output and most likely the same if not more dollars spent

Could also consider a 1JZ-GE or 2JZ-GE. But my prefered engine in a car like that is a BEAMS 3S-GE.

I think you can instantly dismiss the NA JZ variants for the same reason as the M's, they're just as heavy and long.

RWD 3SGE's aren't cheap or common, but if you want to extend your budget, this would be an excellent choice. Of course, you could convert a FWD one to RWD.

What is the exact reason for restricting yourself to naturally aspirated? If it's power delivery, I'd suggest you consider the supercharged 1G-GZE. The power delivery is much the same as an atmo 3 litre, but it's a much smaller engine than a 7M or 2JZ. Definitely well worth considering IMO!
