96 MR2 Wed, 05 March 2003 22:54 Go to next message
Hi guys, I am researching a car to buy... it was going to be a supra... but because my missus want a hilux surf (aparently you call it an sr5 in aussie) im going for a mr2 around 1996... is this an sw60?

Ok.. so... are there any problems with this generation of mr2?

Can the non hard top targa be converted to hard top targa?

This is going to be my weekend car.... there fore.... i want it to be a fun car.. not practical....

I want to put a decent sound system in it but its a mission with the cabin size... does anyone have experience with this?

I am planning to make it really low... but because i live on a farm with a lot of dirt roads it cant be too low.... but what i was thinking was (i know this sounds bad but hear me out)... on fast and the furious there was a car that would raise and lower on its suspension.... where could i get this setup? how much would it cost? has anyone ever done it? it would be perfect for what i want to do....

And lastly... what would be the best to do to this car to really pump it up... performance wise....

i know this all sounds expensive... but ive got an ae92 levin at the mo... it is the best car ive ever had.... it handles well and revs well (cuts out a 9,500rpm) and it goes up to 220kph without a turbo.... it gives a vr4 a run for its money and kicks the crap outa the 3litre camrys.... all in all what im saying is that i love toyotas... they are the best in the world...

i really apreciate any help anyone can give me.... thanks guys & girls (girl racers are cool)

dave....

hey mate a 96 mr2 aus spec or jap if ur saying that u want a weekend car im assuming u want a turbo, the only problem is good luck finding a 96 turbo over here now with the import laws on the mr2, and if u find one i promise u will pay as much for that mr2 as u would for a supra.
in reagrds to the T tops u cant cut it to fit if u did it would be a huge waste of money when u can buy them pre made, u can also get some with a sunroof with the 96 mr2 turbo motor very good motor very very strong its the gen 3 of the 3sgte's by far the best 180kw is standard form if i remember correctly, also with the system by all means but a system in the mr2 but there is no where to put the subs really but the front or the boot with both are impactical, i say this baecuse if u want a targa top u will have no where to put the targas cause they go behind the seat and thats where u would put the subs normally. they come with quite a good system standard anyways. and the model is still sw20/sw21
i own one love it its not too slow either, easy very easy to get lots of power out of.
hope some of this helps
Brad

Great mate, thanks...

I think they are pretty awesome cars too... i took my mates one for a spin (250hp)... man it was a pleasure to drive... some sw20's can still be imported... past a particular chassis number btw.

is there any room to put 6x9's in the doors or anything like that? i dont want show off bass sounds.... just loud and clear...

not if u wanted to put in 6 x 9's im sure u could do that, but to be honest u want clear and loud get a really good set of splits and use them.
and with suspension u mean air bag suspension like in the lexus sc400 the 4.0 v8 model has the air bag suspension i doubt that you can get into a mr2 though, and that lowers and raiese by a button i dont know anything about the hydraulic's though.

For that sort of stuff you want air bag set up, it takes up less space, but you're still going to lose most of you boot for the air tank in either case. oh, and your handling ain't going to be to good either, all the cars going tobe good for is cruzing up and down a stright, i've driven a few MR2's and would love one, they handle well in stock form and lots of parts for them too.
