the starter motor is right down the front of the engine, its hiden in behind the exhaust manifiold, and looks kind of a like a cylinder that is bolted into the gearbox sideways throught the block.

I recomend building a heat shield for the new starter motor while you are there.... because the manifold & engine cook the thing and as a result some engines do not start when hot.... you will save yourself a lot of grief if you take the time to improve the oem heat shield.... trust me....

it's an AE86 sprinter. had a look today and the wires around it were pretty melted from the headers. Can I replace it myself? Are they universal fit? And how much?

haha, nah man, i haven't got the Trueno, i meant 'sprinter' as in the levin - Australian spec (it has the sprinter badge on the back and most ppl in Aus say sprinter- well i do anyway!) Yeah i'm not too much of a fan of the pop up lights either!
Awesome, do you know how much they cost? what can i use as a shield? I thought of foil or something of that criteria
thanks for ur help dude

this was from a site i found... sirect quote... ive got other info about common levin or sprinter issues... i can email you them if you like... by the way... gts is the stupid name for the 4age levin.... (yes some sick bastard actually put a 4afe in some of the levins at the factory....
'
On the GT-S, the starter is sandwiched between a relatively hot engine block and an even hotter exhaust manifold. To their credit, they installed decent OEM heat shields on the exhaust header and starter. Don't be surprised when you get back to the car and the starter won't turn--acute heat soak. The problem's worse if you use aftermarket exhaust headers that don't have heat shields like the KBD unit I'm using. Solution? Fabricate your own heat shield using a sheet of 304 stainless steel and weld on some mounting tabs on the header. You can also buy some of that "heat wrap" for starters that they sell at speed stores. '

oh yeah.. this too for troubleshooting problem starters....
Check each step in order:
Battery charge
Battery terminals and immediate cables in good condition--no fraying
Ground strap from tranny to left frame rail in good condition
Ignition key cylinder
Clutch start safety switch
Starter relay; P/N 28300-16010 (Be forewarned that this relay costs $70+)
Main power cable from positive terminal to starter; P/N 82122-12310 (~$30)
Starter solenoid

Sweet as dude, yeah I've basically checked all those possibilities, but after all that i think the starter motor is calling it quits. Sometimes in the most needed situations, i crank the engine and it just cringes, not even turning over, and lately it's been happening way too often, sometimes i wait at least 10 minutes! Yeah heat is a problem there, it's absolutely rediculous these engines place the starter there!

Yeah mate... ive got the same issue with my ae92 age.....
little trick.... try switching the engine from on to start rapidly till it starts kicking.... it worked for me.... i get a little click and a kind of straining noise and sometimes no straining noise... but that little trick always works within ten seconds....
Youll be right to change the starter anyway.... cos if its already been slammed by the heat you dont want to repair it, install a heat shield and then have to take the whole f%&@ing thing apart in 6 months... But if youve got the cash.... it might be cheaper to buy a whole damn engine.... and keep the rest for spares or sell it on... over in new zealand the junkyard people are absolute thieves... unless your buying something big....

The main wire going into the starter motor (with the little black rubber sealy thing on it) seems to be important on my engine, if that's not firmly pressed on the engine won't start - problem seems as though it's cracked a bit so it slips back...
There's also another connector down there too, have you checked both of them?
